Tide / BOUND explores the complex realities of women navigating a patriarchal society. The work reflects how womanhood is shaped by contradictory forces that coexist together, such as liberation and suppression, empowerment and vulnerability, and presence and invisibility. Inspired by the natural ebb and flow of water, the work mirrors how women’s identities shift and adapt in response to societal pressures. Like water, women move fluidly, yet are often constrained by invisible forces, constantly balancing between liberation and limitation. The cross-over between visual art and performance arts was particularly unique in this piece. It was filmed amongst the art pieces in the show titled What The Water Gave Me. The show gathers the works of women and non-binary artists across print, painting, sculpture, photography, textiles, and mixed media. Titled after Frida Kahlo’s iconic painting, the exhibition invokes water as a shifting metaphor: both a site of drowning and a space of deliberate submersion.
