In this episode of The P.H.Y.S Podcast, I sit down with
@jpittswiley , a Rhode Island native, Yale graduate, portrait photographer, and Artistic Director at Mixed Magic Theatre.
Jonathan’s photography is rooted in the human experience. His portraits seek to capture the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability, revealing the authentic humanity that exists in every subject. Through empathy and artistic intention, he creates images that invite viewers to connect with the people in front of the lens.
In this conversation we explore his journey from studying at Yale University to building a creative life that bridges both photography and theater. For Jonathan, storytelling exists across multiple mediums, and each discipline influences the other.
Since 2010, he has served as the Artistic Director at Mixed Magic Theatre, where he has directed, written, and acted in numerous productions. His work includes powerful performances and adaptations such as August Wilson’s Fences, The Spirit Warrior’s Dream, The Baghdad Tale of Romeo and Juliet, Moby-Dick: Then & Now, Misery’s Fiend: Frankenstein, The Tempest, Art of Attack, King Lear, Great Holiday Traditions, and Dutchman, which was named a Top 10 Show of 2017.
Throughout our conversation we discuss how photography and theater intersect in his creative life, how storytelling shapes both art forms, and how the stage and the camera can reveal the emotional depth of the human experience.
This episode is a thoughtful exploration of creativity, portraiture, performance, and the power of storytelling to both reveal and heal.
