“Another World is Possible!”
This was the slogan of the World Social Forum in 2001 (Porto Alegre, Brazil), which called on people to imagine alternatives to the inequalities of globalization.
I believe that bicycle messengers have always been building such an “alternative world.” We ride race bikes in ways they weren’t originally meant for, move through streets not designed for bicycles, wear jeans and T-shirts instead of cycling gear, and weave through business districts with our own unique style.
In every sense, messengers live outside the mainstream—like a different world of our own. And, just like the global punk rock movement, we share a culture that values diversity while connecting with messenger communities worldwide.
Over the years, we have gathered in forums to discuss issues, and we’ve held messenger races such as CMWC to celebrate our delivery styles. At the same time, globalization and rapid advances in technology have reduced the need for messengers, often undervaluing our work.
But today, as societies look for more sustainable ways to live, the role of the bicycle messenger—as a zero-emission worker — is more meaningful than ever.
For our community to keep growing and stay connected to society, we must continue open dialogue and embrace different voices. That’s why JPBMA, as the only national association in Japan, will remain an inclusive platform for all messengers.

JPBMA’s mission is to:
・Share and support activities with BMAs worldwide and messenger communities across Japan
・Build solidarity with organizations that share our values
・Share messenger culture, stories, and history
・Protect and promote the rights of individual messengers as workers
********************
We live right next to today’s society, creating “another world” of messengers. Let’s keep this door open—together, with dialogue and solidarity.
