Joyner Library’s conservator, Larry Houston, and the head of the North Carolina Collection, Jennifer Daugherty, worked with Dr. Helen Dixon’s Ancient Near Eastern History class to provide students an opportunity to see some of our collections of early Arabic, Hebrew, Latin and Greek works. After learning about early texts on papyrus, students were given the opportunity to make some historic ink and try out brushes and reed pens for writing on real papyrus. Students wrote poetry, copied magic healing charms from early medical texts, or created images based on works from our Special and Circulating Collections.
This was a fantastic collaboration and a great experiential learning opportunity for the participants!

You held an instruction session where?
Yes, the USS North Carolina in Wilmington as part of Dr. Mary Huffman’s place-based learning trip with ELEM 3500. What an experience for all! @ecu_coe
There were tours and various sessions, including Patrick Cash and John Dunning leading instructional sessions about using #ECU Manuscript Collection material related to World War II. Cash's presentation was on prisoners of war as documented in our collections, and Dunning's was on the experience of North Carolinians during WWII.
