Introducing our process The 5 Joys of Paper Making, which have shaped our project Paper Social, an intergenerational project that embraces the sensory process of paper making to form Haringey’s first community paper mill.
1. Collecting!- Finding joy in the potential of recycling paper, cotton and plant matter and gathering and sorting it for use.
2. Shredding! The joy of destruction- ripping, tearing and cutting, winding the handle of our hand shredder and seeing the paper munched in the electric shredder.
3. Pulping! Embracing the joy of sloppy pulp. Blending, mixing, smulching, beating, squeezing, swishing vats, buckets and bowls of paper pulp.
4. Making! Shaping, moulding, couching, pressing, drying pulp to form paper to make things with! We’ve made hats, masks, books and more.
5. Sharing! Showing what you’ve made to others and celebrating it! Keep an eye out for our Paper Parade on Saturday 11 July in Hartington Park.

Anyone who knows me will know that being methodical does not come naturally to me so I very proud of this sample sketch book I am creating to record all the paper experiments @colourcollider and I are undertaking as part of @joy_for_stuff Paper Social. I’m particularly excited by our experiments with vegetable waste and using the little critter hollander beater to turn old bedsheets into beautiful paper. Everything is 100% compostable and I am looking forward to burying any paper we don’t have space or a use for at the end of the project! Paper Social is a weekly paper club in Tottenham open to everyone, if you’d like to make paper with us please come and say hi! POSTIVELY CHUNKING!! 😀 We are so hyped to have our Hollander Beater Critter up and running as part of our Paper Social project! Ready to munch through cellulose fibres like cotton rags and fibrous plant matter to make masses of satisfyingly sloppy slurry to turn into paper!
Invented in Holland in 1680 to improve on labor-intensive stamper mills, it could produce in one day what took a stamper mill eight days. Ours was handmade and shipped from New Zealand by the legend Mark Lander.
So far we've experimented with pulping some old cotton pink sheets and corn husks collected from an allotment...more on the results soon!
Paper Social has been experimenting more with pulp and colours the last two weeks. Blending, squeezing, swirling, smooshing, squishing! Every stage is a sensory treat! Soon we'll be able to make massive amounts of pulp with the help from a surprise hand built piece of kit, arriving all the way from New Zealand!! Watch this space...😃😃😃
It’s happening!! We’re making paper! Great fun today experimenting with different frames and nets to make bigger sheets of paper, determined shredding and very enjoyable reveals of the paper from last week! PAPER SOCIAL is GOOO!! Our new intergenerational project building Haringey's first community paper mill has begun! We're so pleased with how the first session went- thanks to everyone who joined us for shredding, pulping and moulding to make our first batch of paper! Excited to see how it turns out next week and continuing to explore the many possibilities of paper pulp!! 😀✨
