My first photo essay for @nytimes Style is live!
I spend my days inhaling global skate culture while running @skatefol.io , and the @brooklynskatemoms are one of the most inspiring communities I’ve come across. So grateful to be welcomed on the session by the coolest moms and their families.
Beautifully written by @m__e__l______ and masterfully photo edited by @tannercurtis . His guidance and layout expertise breathed life into this project! Thanks to my pals @girlbrainz for the tip (sign up for her all-ages skate lessons!) and @jackiemolloyphoto for helping me pitch.
It’s been a longstanding dream to get a single image in the Times, let alone an entire photo essay. What an honor.
Feeling boundless joy and gratitude right now! Grab yourself a copy of the @nytimes today to check out my profile in the Metro section!
Thank you Jane Margolies for writing this wonderful piece, @poupayphoto for the brilliant photos, @jennifermosbrucker as photo editor, and my fantastic team at @downtownnyc for making this possible. This is a tremendous honor.
You can also read this piece online! Link is in my bio.
I am UNBELIEVABLY PROUD to share that I’ve just received a copy of the FINAL BOOK and it looks spectacular! This is undoubtedly the best thing I’ve ever made (with the help from so many incredible people), and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with the world.
I shot some product photos this afternoon so I can finally stop showing digital renderings :)
Preorders are available on @thamesandhudsonusa ’s site (link in my bio) and books will ship the last week of October. I'm also donating 100% of my profits to @doctorswithoutborders , flagged for COVID-relief.
Swipe to the end for Pigeon King approval.
From grimy underpasses to ornate mansions, Ben Rothenhoefer dances between two worlds running his chandelier cleaning business. Stills from Skaters With Jobs Ep. 21.
Episode 22 drops tomorrow.
Bradley Culebro calls mining “the gambler’s dream job.” He and Mike, better known as Two Guys One Hole, have spent nearly four years living out of a truck, skating and chasing crystals across America. Most days leave them wrecked. Most trips come up empty. And still, they’ve built a life around making just enough to exist, skateboard, and hold onto the best things they’ve ever found.
Shortly after we filmed their episode, their fortunes changed as they landed their first stable mining gig in California. Their first order of business: building a mini ramp on the property.
Stills from Skaters With Jobs Ep. 20.
We got our plaza back, so here’s a little history lesson.
Archival footage courtesy of Brian Panebianco, Pat Heid, LOVE Malmö, X Games, and Ed Bacon’s movie, “Form, Design, and the City”.
My most polarizing episode to date.
The opening line got ripped and reposted by a skate meme page. A lot of people used the comments to air opinions they probably already had. But hopefully the piece challenged a few people, too. Being a cop and a skater, John is caught between two world deeply suspicious of each other. That contradiction is why I pursued the story. I’m skeptical of policing myself, but I also don’t think every piece needs to feel comfortable.
Stills from Skaters With Jobs Ep. 19. New episode dropping shortly and it’s a rogue one.
I shot my first @nike campaign!
No models. 48 hours’ notice. One day in Philly, stopping people on the street. And the city showed up.
Now live in the SNKRS app.
Thanks to everyone who stopped and let me make their portrait! We walked 10 miles and photographed 60 people in 12 hours. To everyone who didn’t make the final cut—I’ll send your portraits soon:)
