Not too many people get to actually make a living off their work. This piece was created by my friend @wardhooper as a commission for a couple using their collection of matchbooks. Ward is best known for his beautiful prints featuring Idaho destinations, but he’s branched out into some fun, new creative formats using ordinary items. Stop in and see him. His shop is located on Main Street in downtown Boise. It’s been an honor watching this artist’s work evolve through the years.

When I lived in Challis, I occasionally rode the Salmon River Express to Idaho Falls for a big weekend in the city. Sometimes it would get so cold across the Arco desert that we were advised to bring a blanket. The Big Southern Butte at sunrise or sunset was always a trip highlight. I assumed its proximity near the INL meant it was off limits. Who knew it’s a hiking destination?

Big Southern Butte is one of the largest volcanic domes in the world but, at 300,000 years old, it is also one of the youngest. Hikers who trek to the 7,550-foot-high summit are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of Idaho.

One of my favorite birds. Our World Center used to have a breeding program for the Harpy Eagle, but ended it because there’s no stopping what’s causing this magnificent creature to be endangered: People with guns who like to kill.
