I rediscovered this photo from the writing of my short film PICKLISH (@picklish_film ) and I ALMOST forgot the anxiety and perfectionism and fear of (relatively) public failure that I battled in the writing stages, all the way into production, and even still in post. This year, I’m continuing to battle & let go of those creativity-blocking fears. I hope you’re looking forward to making some bad art, because I’m looking forward to seeing it— and vice versa.

As gaffer, sometimes you gotta lick your finger, put it in the air, and see which way the sun is blowing. 🌬🌞 I was recently so privileged to Gaff on @interpersonalfilm dir. by FEARLESS @ramsey.morris1 . It was a great, yet challenging learning experience, as our gear and time limitations called for some quick, on-the-fly thinking (shout out to the @sidewalkfilm t-shirt used as a flag). I enjoyed working alongside @jusflms (DP), and as a result I’ll no doubt be better a DoP and communicator on set! Finally, I wanna give props to the production team and crew for such a welcoming and friendly (young/bham based) set! In August, thousands of people watched my work play at the Alabama Theatre. When @sidewalkfilm approached me about creating a sponsor reel to play during Sidewalk Film Fest, I was overcome with imposter syndrome. Though It was just an editing project (using stock footage and clips from films), I battled perfectionism and nerves, knowing that tons of people would see it (and think it sucked) and I’d have to watch it and cringe ALLL Sidewalk Weekend. After making my family watch it multiple times, and some good feedback from Sidewalk’s Team, it was done. On opening night, thousands of people sat attentively as the reel was projected in the Alabama Theatre. The room was silent, and when it ended, the silence broke into applause. I could finally exhale. It received praise and I found myself feeling proud. And so, this is a good, recurring lesson for me, that done is better than perfect, and things aren’t usually as bad as I think it is. I left that weekend at Sidewalk feeling inspired, blissfuly tired from the parties, and determined to make it on the big screen again. This weekend we WRAPPED our 2 BIG production days for our Short Film PICKLISH!! 🥒🎬 Only pickups are left and I've left this weekend feeling incredibly grateful. For this crew, for this cast, for this opportunity. There was truly magic on this set full of diverse, kind and creative people. There's no one who we'd rather have weathered the extreme heat and long days with. Love to all my cast and crew, can't wait to close out this project and come together again when it is on screens.
