Among all the works at Berlin Art Week in the Wilhelmhallen, this series by Milja Laurila struck me the most.
She reuses photographs from a 1930s gynecological and anthropological compendium – images that originally objectified women. Laurila turns the perspective around: only the eyes remain visible. Instead of observing their bodies, we are confronted with their gaze – direct, unsettling, impossible to ignore.
