We went into the studio for one improvised session hoping to walk away with a single. Five hours of later, we had more than enough for an album.
Featuring Matt Robinson on piano and Jon Scott on drums, co-produced with Giles Barrett, and brought to life visually by Francis Devine — this one was a genuine surprise from start to finish.

After the setup video here’s how these drums actually sound unmiced in a medium-sized club venue. The tuning and dampening are a result of working with our sound engineers to get the best sound out front and give them processing options. I gravitate towards more open sounds usually so it’s been a nice journey adapting my touch to the response and sounds of this setup.

Friday night was my last show on @astatkemulatu ’s current “farewell” tour, before I head off for the next leg of the @gogo_penguin US/Canada tour.
Nearly 13 years ago @byron_wallen asked me if I was interested in covering some shows that the great @tomskinnermusic couldn’t make, and I spent a few years dipping in and out of tours before taking over properly around 2018.
It’s been an amazing learning experience and a total joy to play with all the incredible musicians in the band. It’s rare to get the chance to play with someone who made a musical mark like this, and also a band full of bandleaders who put their own egos aside to make this music work every night.
Let’s see what the future holds, but whether we do more shows or not I’m glad to have been a small part of the Ethio-jazz machine these past years.
