I'm disappointed that my gallery is now overcrowded with events and self-promotion. Part of being a freelenacer is the dehumanizing emotional labor of becoming a brand, always aware that your income depends on converting attention into transaction. I forget to post stupid cat photos. Or faux artistic shots of street graffiti. Or cute selfies. I avoid being sincere for fear of being cringe. I carry the guilt of not reposting the events kind enough to host me. Or organisers kind enough to tag me.
Most of all I miss not being mediated by a screen or an algorithm. Cringe though it may sound, I miss you.
Jon is a writer who dabbles in a bit of everything. He’s written about a dozen plays, a handful of short films, an unproduced series for Showmax, several computer games, and an Afrofantasy novel about rebels and sentient plants – The Unwoven Warrior (2025). He runs the monthly Ravel Writers, is a regular feature at Comic Con, and knows just about everyone in town.
Jon will be on two panels at Otherworld on Saturday, 19 July. He’ll be a panellist on Bent and Blended where Shameez Patel Papathanasiou will be talking to him, Anoshi Saretzki, Masha du Toit, Zayaan Schroeder and Tanya Meeson about how authors mix and match genre conventions and tropes to make their story and characters pop. That panel will be from 11:30 to 12:30.
And then he’ll be chairing a second panel, Write Like a SFF Pro, where he’ll be sharing his insights along with other seasoned SA spec fic authors, Sam Wilson, Nerine Dorman, Kerstin Hall, Mia Arderne and Shameez Patel Papathanasiou. This one is going to POP. Do not miss it especially if you’re a new writer in the biz. Catch that panel after lunch from 13:30 to 14:30.
