Tonight at 9pm will be the second edition of “Absent Fathers” on @resonancefm where I’ll be joined live in the studio by @sarahmkarchdeacon . Sarah’s theatre piece “Washing Machine Vortex” explores the perspective of being in her 50s and coming to terms with the strange and sometimes uncomfortable experiences of her childhood. We will play draft clips of the audio version we are building together from her stage creation along with some of the fabulous 1970s music that is part of the piece. In the programme tonight, I’ll be asking Sarah about how this is the most personal piece of theatre she’s yet made, why she chose to delve into her evolving relationship with her father, and what she’s discovered through this artistic process. The photographs of Sarah and her father in this reel were captured by @joncarchdeacon and these and other images provide the visual background for the stage play.

I am excited to announce that my new exhibition, Boundary Layer, will be open from April 10-May 15 at Pagoda Red Gallery in Chicago. These new studio photographs, taken by the talented Jon C Archdeacon, showcase some of the behind the scenes for creating this body of work. This collection was created during the London winter, when the trees are skeletal and the landscape becomes misty tones of gray and brown. Mosses emerge as vivid interruptions and bring moments of green softness to the environment. They do not erase the starkness around them but bejewel it. The paintings in Boundary Layer move across this spectrum, highlighting subtle shifts in atmosphere, scale, and time. They imagine small forest worlds where quiet persistence becomes visible. Many of the pieces in this upcoming show were initially inspired by my residency at the Burren College of Art in Ireland last fall, and then created in my studio awarded by Caroline Boseley for the Studio West Residency in London. Thank you ❤️ @joncarchdeacon @ap_fitzpatrick @pagodared @carolineboseley @studio_west_arts @burrencollegeofart

Read ‘The Alchemist’, a Conversation Piece with Mindy Lee that was created after a brief half an hour visit to the studio at Imperial College, and then an hour long conversation over the phone. Just like Mindy’s own creative process; a quick and short bursts of creative connection and it was such a fun to get to talk to her and explore her creative process. Recently in London @martina___siskova and @joncarchdeacon visited the show I curated with @hali_oz , EXISTENTIAL Licence. Featuring a host of exciting abstract paintings from London and abroad the exhibition was shown in a residential property, 88 Friary Road Peckham, where I made some of my most exciting work. I talked to Martina in a few telephone conversations also about elliptical works and regarding the use cities have for showing - how it is if we choose to make our work outside of those bustling places. One time I was standing on a rooftop in Rome where I made lots of small works over the past year. The painting I created for EXISTENTIAL LICENCE was made in the Sabina studio and mirrors the kind of experience I have daily in the woodland here. Thanks @martina___siskova and @joncarchdeacon for both the conversations and the pictures Jon took while we were talking - look forward to seeing them in Italy next time :) Catch our conversation here - /home/post/p-177008748

Objects, History, Time. Curated by David Leapman and Christine Stark. Featuring Nick Aguayo, Jon Archdeacon, Bob and Roberta Smith, Karen Byrne, Vincent Hawkins, Lee Holden, Maria Lalic, Simon Leahy-Clark, David Leapman, Mali Morris, Jon Ridge, Tania Salha, Christine Stark, Peter Suchin, Naomi Van Holbutt, Jessica Voorsanger, Julian Wakelin, Steven Wolkoff. Objects, History, Time explores the relation between visual art and the domestic interior, in deliberate opposition to the non-standardised phrasing of works within Modernist “white cube”. The latter supposedly provides a value-free location in which contemporary art’s intrinsic aesthetic features are supported and indeed strengthened by the gallery’s blank space. In stark contrast, Vestry Street, operating as both public gallery and private apartment, is an ideal “experimental zone” for the bringing together of a diverse range of works and an idiosyncratic space of display. Among the literary material relating to this exhibition are Brian O’Doherty’s Inside the White Cube (1976), Joris-Karl Huysmans’ Against Nature (1884), London’s Sir John Soane’s Museum (c. 1837), and Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space (1958). Thanks to curators @davidleapman and @stark.christine for including me in this great lineup of artists. @vestry_st @nickaguayo84 @stevenwolkoff @malimorrisstudio @davidleapman @jessicavoorsanger_artist @bobandrobertasmith @stark.christine @vincent_hawkins_ @karenbyrnestudio @simonleahyclarkstudio @t4tano @jonridge @joncarchdeacon @marialalicstudio @petersuchin

"I caught Hannah late on a Saturday evening while she put on her dinner; after a day spent gilding frames for the forthcoming show. For me it was just a quiet evening; and while we spoke on the phone I walked around our neighbourhood, blossoming flowers in surrounding gardens like pots of bright colour in the blue dusk; a perfect backdrop to our conversation….” Read the full piece at: moreconversationpieces.substack.com "Reading Martina's words and seeing Jon's photographs takes me right back to standing in my kitchen, right back to sitting on my grandparents 1960's sofa in the studio, right back to that intensely personal experience of putting together ' Un-Still' for The New Art Gallery Walsall. An exhibition around family, time, memory, love and loss. 'Transformations in time' is a tender and beautiful memory of memories of memories of memories of time." Take a look at moreconversationpieces on Substack for this and other artists interviews and conversations. As a final note, "The planned In-Conversation at The New Art Gallery, Walsall and Limited edition Print launch scheduled for Saturday 11th October has had to be postponed. Hannah would like to send apologies to all those of you who were travelling up especially and a new date will be advertised soon”. .uk/exhibition/hannah-maybank-un-still/ @thenewartgallerywalsall #substack #thenewartgallerywalsall #gilded #pigments #alchemy
