20 years of KTM history in 11 seconds
Back-to-back comparisons of these pivotal design changes is interesting and instructive. Extremely different machines, yet something familiar woven between them all.

Fun weekend exploring some new-to-me places in the same mountains where much of my early riding took place. Words, photos, and video to come… eventually. Lot more miles to put in first. 😁

Haven’t done the surfing thing consistently since roughly when LMFAO released “Party Rock Anthem”, so why not start back up with an ocean-centric sport in central Texas? 🤔🤷♂️
.
I installed fins, and waxed this new board for the first time in Austin, of all places. Only to drive farther inland, to Waco, where it saw water for the first time. Surf tech has changed a bit in the last 10 years. Makes me want to learn new things.
.
First 15 minutes in the pool, I was entirely useless. Reading the environment here is almost nothing like the ocean at first. Once it starts to click however... SO fun...

In the new Tuareg 660 Rally, Aprilia has come up with a welcome interpretation of advancement. Improving on a good thing can sometimes be a dicey proposition. Several examples come to mind of bikes and other products which, in the quest for advancement, experienced a dilution of the very qualities that made them desirable. Rather than create a new bike intended to replace or be an upgrade to the standard Tuareg 660, the Rally version is a motorcycle that looks quite similar to the standard, but will quite possibly appeal to an entirely different customer. The Tuareg 660 Rally is a bike designed for rally racers, or those aspiring to be, without the rally budget.

If a bat fought a shark, who would win? While this might sound like the sort of thing someone would ask at a cage fight in a gothic-themed sushi restaurant, this scene from one of Jacques Cousteau’s nightmares came to mind while testing motorcycles. Full story @motorcycle_com

Performance motorcycling is often characterized by displacement one-upmanship, bleeding-edge tech, and gram counting for optimal weight profiles. Ironically, fostering continued growth in motorcycling as a whole could benefit from an emphasis on the polar opposite of these things.
Taking someone curious about motorcycling but having no prior experience, and throwing them on a Yamaha Ranything would potentially be a disservice. Like teaching someone to surf at Jaws or learning marksmanship with an M1 Garand.
In the WR125R, Yamaha targeted three primary consumers, first being new riders. For someone with no motorcycling background, Yamaha’s new 125 offers an extremely approachable machine in both form factor and price for anyone curious about either on or off-road riding. The second group could fall into the category of a market capture exercise: riders with experience on road, or off-road, but not both. Dirt riders wanting something with a plate to get around town, or street riders curious about those unpaved trails veering off their regular routes would be hard pressed to find a new bike with both a welcoming price and robust feature set like the WR125R.
The little machine is surprisingly fun… full story in an upcoming issue of Roadrunner magazine.

Triumph Motorcycle’s global press launch presented five new motorcycles, and begged one fundamental question: what is at the core of our species’ fascination with motorcycles? This question arose naturally as I was able to take each of the 2026 Bonneville models for a spin, and potentially rediscover some key element that turns people into riders.
What is the inherent fascination that even non-riders seem to have with motorcycles? Answers will surely vary, and almost as surely those answers will tread into the metaphysical. Whatever intangible elements these mystical machines have, Triumph seems to have done a solid job in honoring the genesis of it with their 2026 Bonneville lineup.

Sometimes, the wisdom of strangers in the desert carries more weight than all of the forecasting tools available to city-dwellers. At a fuel stop in Mojave, the older gentleman who approached and kindly posed this question had the appearance and gait of someone who might not presently ride motorcycles, but seemed to have a lot of experience in the desert.
My answer to this stranger’s question was a simple, “𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯.”.
The skies had opened up as we were leaving LA, and the storm continued all the way to Panamint Springs. Brief pauses in the downpour were insignificant at best, as record-breaking rain in Death Valley continued throughout the night and into the following day, with snow falling simultaneously at higher elevations.
Waking to a winter wonderland out of some Western film that was never made meant plans had to change, and they did, sort of.

The name “Rally” needs to be underscored when looking at Aprilia’s new Tuareg 660. With their “Back To Africa Project,” Aprilia set its sights on the Africa Eco Race. This race features a class for purpose-built 450cc rally bikes, as well as a dedicated class for bikes over 650ccs. In their first attempt at this challenge with Jacopo Cerutti behind the bars, Aprilia not only dominated the 650cc-plus class, but won the entire race overall by a commanding lead.
If you’ve got dreams of podium finishes in African rally raids, this might just be the training bike for you.
Full review online now @advpulse , and video review coming soon (as well as a review of the Leatt gear featured).

After over 20 years in the powersports industry, finally rode a track day! Having worked with many pro riders on many tracks across the country, I’d seen what was possible, but always through a camera lens.
Thankfully, for this first experience my friend and legendary cycling trainer @nateloyal came along to show me the ropes. Nate and I have ridden Baja and elsewhere together, and he was able to use his extensive track experience to observe and translate my off-road riding habits to into something that worked on the tarmac.
The vast majority of my riding over the years has been on adventure bikes, so starting out the day on a Multistrada was perfect to get a feel for Chuckwalla raceway’s structure. Switching to the RS 660 Factory felt super foreign at first, until bits of Nate’s instruction started to take hold.
Towards the end of the day, lap times sped up, while everything felt like it was going slower. I’ve got some riding school assignments to investigate for a story coming in 2026… looking forward to writing this one up!
Many thanks to @drocdesmo and @renatobo for the invite and putting on a great event!
