The more I get to do this, the more I truly believe that acting is pure instinct. I know there are lots of other things involved, and I’m fully aware of that. But when you really get to know your character before you step on set and start to feel what they’re feeling… that’s when instinct kicks in, and the choices you make become more than just that. They become character-specific actions that turn into moments that bring life to the fictional human being you’re trying to make the audience understand or empathize with.
What I learned about Isiah before stepping on set was that he had no time to pause. He had no time to breathe. He had no time to take stock of his heart, mind, and body. He had no time to truly face the pain he was dealing with because of his brother’s loss. He had no time to grieve.
After a few takes, I felt something in my chest. And my stomach. I got a knot in my throat… and instinct kicked in. I asked my director,
@chriscameron.me , if I could have one more take. He and
@boulderbushido checked the time, and they allowed it. This is the result.
A moment to finally pause, take off the gloves, and breathe. To release it all. The anger. The pain. The fear. The doubt. All of it, if only for one moment. Because Isiah knew that once the tears dried up and the gloves came back on… it was back to work.
I’m happy this was captured. Extremely proud of this moment.
Grateful for the
@lastmanslandfilm crew. Thank you for giving me space to follow my gut.
And to my peers, I want to encourage you to always follow your instincts. And never be afraid to ask for one more take.
