Henri Matisse // "The essential thing is to work in a state of mind that approaches prayer." I bow at the feet of this master. And another master @krok.al who taught me to draw with a long stick, and who introduced me to #matisse when I was very young. Photo by @donald_shuv 🙏🏼 #matisse #spiritmatter #nirox

Still glowing from a wonderful opening of my exhibition at @escatgallery last night. I’ll share installation images soon. For now I want to say how special it was having my lovely family with me, and some dear friends over from Scotland @ja_coco_ @davie_miller_ and that working with @pauescat has been a joy. ✨

This new little painting has taken a while to develop, layer upon layer and now really feels like it wants to be a sculpture. Excavated Landscape (XXIV) Oil, pigment and ground mountain rock on card, mounted on canvas with hardwood frame 32 x 32cm At the end of the process of painting my large canvases I always have an excess of paint. The piles and scrapings of caked paint form a multi-coloured landscape; a mix of ground earth, rock, natural pigments and paint from the tube. This paint is the foundational material for this series titled ‘Excavated Landscapes’, small paintings evoking the landscapes that are in the most part made of the material source of the paint itself. These are small mountains and valleys, waves and winds made with the substance of the terrain itself. DM for more info ✨

I spent a wonderful day today helping clear a studio for the brilliant artist and right hand of Richard Demarco, Terry Ann Newman. Her body of work inspired by the mystical 14th Century text ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’ is vibrant with a mysterious power. She and Richard are dear friends and my life is richer with them in it. ✨ Image 1.) Joseph Beuys “New beginnings are in the offing” Image 2.) Richard and a portrait of him, by me, on the wall Image 3.) Terry in her new clear studio space

In Lisbon delivering and installing this new painting acquired by my lovely friends Ben @not_benvig and Stephanie for their new condo. Ben has consistently bought works of mine over the past few years and it is such a joy seeing how much he is fed by art. Feeling grateful for this experience 🌞

When your hero and mentor @demarco_archive compares you to both Nureyev and Van Gogh in an article in @forbes it is impossible not to be deeply moved. Daniel Scheffler has written a wonderful tribute to Richard Demarco, now age 95, about his 79 year-long relationship with the Edinburgh International Festival and his life-long commitment to working for truth, art and humanity. The link to the article is in my stories, and below. Grazie Rico 🧡 📸 @arturhalka /sites/danielscheffler/2026/04/13/the-horse-that-built-a-festival-in-edinburgh-scotland/
