Thirty years ago, I played guitar with a group of great musicians in the house band (backing Matthew Sweet, P.F. Sloan and others) at this performance (presented by Wild Honey) at The El Rey Theatre of The Beach Boys’ album “Pet Sounds” which was released sixty years ago today.

Three years ago this week, Tall Poppy Syndrome’s second single “Let It Ride” debuted at #1 on the chart at “The Big Bang” KDHX 88.1 FM in St. Louis.
As a bonus, I also played the guitars on the track at #7, “Sleepwalker” by Tony Marsico.

In 1980, having won tickets on KROQ, my friend and I went to see Ian McLagan at Perkin’s Palace in Pasadena (it was rumored that Keith or Ronnie would make a guest appearance, which they didn’t.)
The sessions I did with Shel Talmy a few years ago were engineered by the guitarist who did play that show with Ian; Johnny Lee Schell, who also wrote Ian’s “radio hit” “Little Troublemaker” (recently covered by Slamdinistas.)
Happy Birthday to Ian, one of my fave keyboard players ever. Fortunately, I got to see him perform again (at The Mint) shortly before he passed.

When Theresa and I were first a-courting, we attended a party where Donovan approached me and asked how I’d been. I introduced him to Theresa and the three of us chatted for quite a bit. When he left, she whispered to me “I can’t believe you just introduced me to Donovan.”

This is my second motherless Mother’s Day and still I’m sad but I’m also very grateful for having been raised by a young, fun and carefree woman who encouraged me to read, listen to and watch everything and anything I wanted as a child which made me the person I am.
