The device has all of the promised features, looks and feels great, and is interesting to assemble without being frustrating.
Each new product over the last 10 years has been an improvement on the last, but this one is far beyond anything we’ve done before. @jcnoguera ‘s studio did a phenomenal job on the design and modeling!
I wish we’d made more of them, hopefully we will again at AU 2026 in Las Vegas.
For the 2025 Factory Experience, I was having designer’s block. We needed fresh ideas, and I wanted to find a way to engage the Fusion community in the project somehow. Enter @lobosdesign and @rittigers ! Alex suggested we team up and involve the RIT industrial design program.
We gave a brief for their T-Minus event, where 50+ groups of students came up with a concept in one week: an electron consumer product that could fit in your hand, would showcase several manufacturing methods, would be something AU attendees would want, and would be useful beyond the event.
The winning entry would become the MultiMeasure, a device that measures distance, angle, level, and color.
This project is always a puzzle. The device has to be interesting to assemble without being frustrating, useful to the typical AU attendee, and represent as many manufacturing methods as possible. V1 proved to be too far on the frustrating end of the assembly experience spectrum. In V2, we solved this by removing two of the components, relying more on the IJM enclosure for structure, and switching to more robust materials for some of the parts.
For AU 2024, we went with V2 of the Autodesk Keypad. V2 brings a lot to the table: easier to assemble, better fit and finish, a sleeker aesthetic, and a reduced environmental impact.
@blaster701 joined us for this one bringing his world class industrial design skills to the table. A clever way to give the device a leaner profile was to make it BIGGER. By increasing the width and length, decreasing the thickness, and adding a sensuous curve in place of a draft angle, we were able to give it a streamlined look much better than
Thanks to @craighillcompany for the amazing product samples! They make elevated everyday objects that you’ll absolutely love, all design and made with @adskfusion . This ruler / caliper is incredibly well made! The tolerances are so tight it almost feels like the slide mechanism is on a gas spring or something- I love nothing more than a useful object, well made, that will last a lifetime. Keep up the good work guys!
Thanks to @craighillcompany for the amazing product samples! They make elevated everyday objects that you’ll absolutely love, all design and made with @adskfusion . This classic Jack Puzzle is hefty, made from solid brass with a super clean finish. Really upping my desk widget game with this one!
The AU Factory Experience Keypad comes with hot keys for the 5 top Autodesk apps preprogrammed. Each app changes the LED color to match. This one is Fusion Orange (or as close as we could get with #circuitpython). #productdesign #design #3dprinting #fusion360 #3dmodel #technology #socialamp #socialmedia #opensource #jonathanodom #diy #experiment #art #machine #play #maker #make #electronics #fusion360made #fusion360cam #au2023
Full kit for the AU 2023 Factory Experience Keypad! I’ve got some leftover from the event and am slowly getting them out to volunteers and a handful of Fusion users. #productdesign #design #3dprinting #fusion360 #3dmodel #technology #socialamp #socialmedia #opensource #jonathanodom #diy #experiment #art #machine #play #maker #make #electronics #fusion360made #fusion360cam #au2023
