At the heart of the Directors Lab are the advisors, experienced artists who remind us that filmmaking is less about perfection and more about presence, pivots, and possibility. When a scene wasn’t working, advisors like Joi McMillon and Jomo Fray offered wisdom, calm, and creative clarity. Their guidance creates a space where fellows can embrace failure, lean into spontaneity, and turn uncertainty into discovery.
As the Sundance Institute Directors Lab turns 45, we’re celebrating this milestone by highlighting the mentors who make this space so transformative. To ensure future fellows have access to this kind of support, we invite you to make a gift and join us as we champion independent voices by keeping the labs alive. 🎬

Step behind the lens with cinematographer Jomo Fray (@jomofray ) at the Sundance Institute’s 2025 Directors Lab. After two previous years on the crew, this summer marked his first time as a Creative Advisor. Fray captured the spirit of the lab on half-frame 35mm film. His diptych-style images offer a layered, narrative feel. “I create stories in my head between the images,” he told us.

Perfection isn’t the goal; authenticity is.
As filmmakers and artists, we often chase the illusion of flawless imagery. But Jomo Fray (Cinematographer, Nickel Boys @jomofray ) reminds us that cinema moves us precisely because it reflects life: messy, spontaneous, beautifully imperfect.
When we embrace imperfection and lean into emotional truth, our images resonate more deeply. Let life be your inspiration—mistakes, surprises, and all.
How can you let go of perfectionism and create something more real today?
“All image-making is an act of love. It allows us to see without prejudice, to see openly.
It’s an emotional thing, not a technical one.”
