A few words about my last project for AIDA „Club Reward“ Anyone who has ever filmed on a cruise ship knows how difficult the logistics and filming conditions on board are. We shot the project alongside 3500 guests on board and only had one day of preparation on board. As is so often the case, preparation was the most important thing and the majority of the film was done at home on the computer. On our prep day on board, we tested the film and the transitions once. As there were thousands of other people on board besides us who all wanted to enjoy their trip, we had to decide weeks in advance when we would shoot where and what had to be blocked and when. So I created several sketches of the ship and made suggestions based on the position of the sun (cheers to the apps) as to when we could shoot where, always bearing in mind that we were very limited in the lighting crew and could only transport lighting equipment by plane. The outdoor scenes were all shot on location. We couldn’t set up big butterflies because of the wind and it wouldn’t have been possible anyway because of the size and the necessary tripods. So we helped ourselves with foldable 4x4 and 6x6 frames (grid / black / white / silver) and used the most perfect sun positions possible. We had two LED units with us for the interior scenes. We covered the windows with several rolls of black rubbish bags, as Molton would have been too big and too heavy to transport. It was a really exciting approach to have to limit yourself so much.
