Keyed with a CL220 and a light dome + grid to give off more window side lighting. Used the tiny but powerful CL60 and pointed that into a 4x4 unbleached muslin for the return and that filled in the area nicely.
The walls were mostly white and I decided to go for a bit of a moody vibe, so I placed a 8x8 solid to increase some contrast. The sun was pretty hot that day in the morning so I topped the window with a 2x3 silk and a placed scrim nets on the windows to take down the highlights as much as I could.

New lighting breakdown!
Setup using the @aputure.lighting Spotlight Max! (Link in bio)
The tight space of the single car garage made it challenging to key our subject (@activepoet ) for his music video. We placed the spotlight max on a short combo stand (dolly low boy) and aimed it at a 2x3 foam board to give a soft return for the key. We placed a 1200D outside the window with a warm gel to give off the look of the sun with some haze.
Added some negative fill to keep the contrast dark. Placed a couple of MCs behind the monitor for some green.

New Lighting Breakdown!
From a fun portrait, project called “Two Sides”.
I love trying out new setups and effects. Placed an Aputure Nova 300 tuned to green, through one window and a 300x with some sodium vapor gel through the other. Rigged a ProLycht Orion 300fs above tuned to ocean blue and a mini dome. Also added a flicker effect. Added some black wrap to tease off the wall. We put some newspapers on the windows to add some texture.

Travel shoot. Corporate tone. Moody lounge setting.
I’ve been traveling a lot lately and wanted to share a breakdown from this LinkedIn shoot in New York — flying in from San Francisco with a lean crew and a focused kit.
We didn’t get to scout this location beforehand, so the goal was to travel with a flexible lighting kit that could handle both a two-person conversation and single-person interviews.
We used a cross-key approach using two @aputure.lighting 600d’s with Light Dome SE modifiers. Each light worked as the key for one subject while naturally becoming a rim/backlight for the other subject — creating shape and separation without needing additional backlights or overcrowding the space.
We leaned into the mood of the location.
Dark walls.
Teal seating.
Warm practicals glowing in the background.
The keys were tuned slightly warmer than daylight (around the 4800–5000K range) to keep skin tones natural while letting the practicals stay warm and rich in the background.
For fill, we used a 200w @colborlight with a lantern and skirt, raised between the cameras on a baby boom arm. The skirt kept the lantern from spilling onto the walls so it could gently lift shadows on the subjects without flattening the room. Placed a few MCs to lift the back wall.
Shot on three REDs
We flew in with the lights from SF and rented stands and sandbags locally from a grip shop in New York. Everything moved on a Rock-N-Roller cart — including hauling the full kit nine floors down during load-in for this location. Elevators, hallways, tight turns… the cart definitely earned its keep.
Overall it worked out and keeping it lean worked out well for us.

Hey guys, let’s talk Rembrandt lighting! Here’s a classic technique that never goes out of style!
A classic portrait technique where a small, inverted triangle of light is created on the subject’s cheekbone, opposite the light source.
Simple yet very effective. We placed our key (Colbor 200w with a light dome + grid) 45 degree and slightly above eyeline. This helps create that triangle shape on the shadow side of the face. Added a little haze for atmosphere and a mirror to show some of the return from the projector.
Rembrandt lighting is effective in creating mood such as drama, intimacy and mystery. Try it out! Love using this style of lighting almost all the time!
