Ceramic artist John Quick's work uses mold-making, casting, and hand-building to create pieces that balance precision with expressive form. Lately, they have been reworking familiar historical ceramic forms with results that sit somewhere between functional objects and sculpture.
For the surface of their pieces, John works with simple palettes, soft gradients, and minimal patterns. They spend a great deal of time testing stains to develop a wide range of colors, comparing them side by side before beginning the glazing process. โThe patterns stay minimal, influenced by my favorite tools in my studio: my atomizer and airbrush. These tools allow the glazes to blend smoothly into one another and also somehow harken back to my Florida-boy roots,โ says John.
