A snippet from Rainforest to Reef, a little “silent film”. No words, just a reef story told through music and nature. Filmed across the reef over 5 years, music written over 3.

Sparkle Manta.. This morning off the beach near the Gold Coast… Was cruising along the coast doing “Barrel Rolls” every few minutes. A feeding method they use when they find a patch of plankton in high concentration.
The “Sun glitter” shimmering/star-like effect is reflection of the sun on a slightly uneven water surface. When it’s not too calm and not to wavey and you increase the shutter speed this happens because the water’s surface acts as a collection of thousands of tiny, independent mirrors that reflect the sun from different distances directly into the lens.

The crazy colours of the sponges and sponge dwelling characters of Port Phillip Bay earlier this month. Always good to get back in here and go on a Nudi Search.

A Port Jackson Shark cruising over the kelp off the Victorian Coast. Watch until the end and you can see how the shark repositions its dorsal fins sideways to slow down faster, just like how planes use spoilers on the wings once they land on the runway. Nature figures out the best ways…

Home in the kelp gardens last week. Where my ocean journey began off the rocky shores of the Victorian coastline. Never realised how unique and diverse the algae cover was back home until I saw other places.. It may just look like a bunch of seaweed, but these gardens are home to many animals, plus a few weird people who love rolling by around in the surge of the waves… normally this spot has 2m swell crashing over it, but got a calm day this time… The fish are mostly Sea Sweep and Wrasse, couple of classic southerners moving with the motion of the ocean..

Weedy Seadragon hide and seek off the Mornington Peninsula last week.. Always good to see these guys camouflaging in the thick cover of A. antarctica, a flowering plant that lives in protected bays of southern Aus.. so unique 👌
