Rocks Lamp - a lamp for your rocks
Stones and shells from the beach, tumbled gems from gift shops, or lucky finds on a hike 🐚💎🪨
Lay them on the lamp to see which ones glow ✨ then turn the dimmer to tune the brightness to your rocks.
It makes for great ambient light, a fairly amusing toy, and a cozy home for your rock collection. DM if interested!
@lichennyc is a thoughtfully run design studio and furniture store based in Brooklyn. I’m happy to be stocking a few of my Soma Lamps on their shelves 🪵💡🪨
The Soma Lamps are quite fun to build. Each one is a unique improvisation built around the same simple framework — a base, a dimmer stone, and a tapered lampshade. Working within these parameters gives me room to lean into the sculptural side of my practice and to constantly explore different materials.
Rocks Lamp - a lamp for your rocks
Lots of rocks glow! These ones ones here get their translucency from their quartz content, but other mineral-rich stones such as alabaster, opal, and marble can light up too.
The base features carved bowls embedded with LEDs and a dimmer so you can tune the brightness to your chosen rocks.
Here’s the latest iteration of the rocks lamp 🪨✨
Four LEDs are embedded into a chunky wooden base, each one lighting a stone from below. It’s meant as both display and a playground - a place to keep your collection, and also to experiment! Try different rocks in the light and discover the glows hiding inside.
Also, stone on the front right serves as a rotary dimmer so you can tune the brightness to match your rocks.
Here are some pictures of this Rock Light concept I’ve been working through.
I found these quartz-rich stones that emit a warm glow when lit and I set out to I build a light-embedded base to highlight this effect. Five wooden pedestals were carved to fit the water-worn curves and a board was placed underneath to give space for more rocks - serving as a small invitation to collect, play, arrange, and discover.
I’ll be exploring this concept further and building more iterations - feel free to reach out if you might want a rock lamp!
Support Systems: The Art of the Jewelry Box
For this show, @tzuhsinlu made several small treasures and I built a display to hold them.
Her pieces are explorative and composed. Made with both a unique openness to ideas and an impressive decisiveness. My jewelry box, a freely-configurable assortment of wooden bowls, was arranged to complement and softly cradle each piece.
Thank you @isabella.matilde.essermunera and @cruiseship.curatorial for putting this together, and to @cristinagrajalesgallery for hosting. There’s so much great craft from a wide range of disciplines on display and we’re honored to be showing alongside it all.
Show is open Nov 17-24 at 50 Vestry St.
Catch Lu and I there for the reception event this Friday 11/21 starting 6pm
Victor’s Lantern, 2025
This light was made as part of an art trade with @incometats . He gave me some marks that inspire me on the daily 🖤✨ and I tried my best to make him something special in return ☀️✨
It’s on view for one week at @parkatkims — a sweet new cafe that just opened up in lower manhattan.
And it’s part of groupshow with the very talented painter @nayounryu
big shoutout to all the people putting their beautiful creative energy out into the universe!! 💌
PARK at KIMS is pleased to host its first exhibition featuring these two New York-based Korean artists.
Housewarming is a celebration of light, color, and community marking the opening of PARK at KIMS, a newly opened cafe nestled between Nolita and Chinatown. In a city that is constantly shifting; both outwardly and within; this exhibition invites you to pause and engage with one of its newest corners.
John Junior Kim @johnjuniorkim sets the tone with atmospheric lighting installations, while Nayoun Ryu @nayounryu lets the space bloom through her paintings.
This exhibition is a chance to discover one of the city's newest spaces and to give it a warm welcome through our presence and shared moments.

bamboo candle for cooper
just a bit brighter than a candle.
this one’s made with walnut, charred bamboo, some bits of metal, and tv screens.
like the others in this theme, there is an opalite marble in the center that filters the light into a natural gradient of reds to yellows.
i think it adds a mystic warmth wherever it goes 🌀🔥
The latest Soma light
The shade here is made from a diffusive sheet extracted from a television. It sits on a walnut base and is accompanied by a rock that functions as a rotary dimmer.
CD rack lamp
a unique commission to convert a CD rack into a lamp.
The design rests within the original structure and highlights the essential components of a lamp: socket, wire, and shade.
and it’s a really practical light. with three sockets, a dimmer, and a foot switch, it has a useful interface and a big range of lighting potentials ☀️☀️
