For my upcoming 15 songs I’ll be releasing over the summer the great @gidon_carmel did 12 songs in one day with me 🤯🤯 insane work!
Avocado drums: With a d12 and a FET47 we have a big and warm lowend that is reasonably punchy. Although there is more space for making it even more tight.
With a sm57 and a km84 we get a very bright and snappy snare. Overheads, close rooms, far rooms, wurst, all in ribbon character make the drums wrapped in a soft shell. Just the way I like them. Tight and warm.

I’m not gonna pretend. I’m absolutely fanboying right now. 😇 I just got accepted to @ascheps masterclass at @rueboyer in Paris, and honestly, it feels surreal. A week with someone whose work has shaped how I think about music and mixing is genuinely a dream come true.
His discography speaks for itself. Working with some of my favourite artists of all time. And what strikes me most isn’t just the caliber of artists he’s worked with, but the care and creativity he brings to every project. There are so many more incredible collaborations I could mention, but these are just the ones that jumped out when I was going through his work.
Beyond the technical side, what I respect most is how genuine he seems as a person. That matters to me.
If you’re into mixing, production, or just great music. This man’s work is essential listening.

D’Angelo used a vintage U67 for his vocals. For the drums, we dialed in a mixed setup somewhere between Beatles, D’Angelo and Steve Albini: Kicks: FET 47 and RE20. Sm57 on the snare to cut through, Cole’s as OHs and the D19, the same mic that shaped the Beatles’ sound. Every choice here was deliberate. Which one made the biggest difference? Last week we recorded the @officialyisit at Lone Pine Recording Studio with @gidon_carmel . Now, we’re shaping it into a production: overdubs, percussion, guitar layers, harmonies: coming together in my studio.
It was important to us to have the full band recorded together to keep the natural feel of the songs alive. This also helps translate songs better to concerts as the feel will be more consistent.
Stay tuned for something beautiful is being made 🥰👏
