A moment years in the making. I had a chance to take my two sons, @yo_filipino and @bisaac5316 on a trip to New York. A trip that I will never forget. To see my sons explore the city, each in their own way, brought me so much joy. To see these two together was even more joyful. William turned 22 on this trip. He feels New York calling his name, and I hope it comes true for him. I love you, sons, and thank you for sharing this moment with me.

Happy 90th Birthday to the Queen Mother. The one who gave me my Mother. The one who radiates joy and gives herself for her family. The one whose hugs and kisses shaped me into who I am. The one from where love flows. I hold you in a place most high. Where you have my heart. I love you Nanay. And may you live forever.

Today marks 4 years that you went home to be with your Mother and Brothers. Every year, I grow more grateful for you and what you’ve taught me. I know you’re watching us continuing your legacy, and you’re happy. But know your absence is felt everyday. I love you, Dad.

THESE TWO. I met Craig back in 2009 when my band did a short tour that brought us to St. Louis. All we knew was that there was guy that was willing to let us stay at his house for a few days and crash on his couch and floor. We really didn’t know what to expect and no way of knowing who he really was, just some MySpace messages saying that he loved our band and wanted us to play a show with him. And yes, I said MySpace. I’m old. When we get there, he’s waiting for us and we are immediately greeted with a warm smile and a helping hand. Little did we know that we were about to receive the CSRCT (The Craig Scott Red Carpet Treatment). Needless to say, the show went off without a hitch and he and his amazing family became our family. We hugged and made a point for it not to be the last time to see each other. Fast forward a few years, and now Craig meets Christie. A complete stunner and a perfect match for Craig. She can handle his sarcasm and can give it right back. And just as loving as Craig. I shoot their engagement photos back in STL and Craig once again rolls out the CSRCT. His kindness is boundless. A few years later, Craig and Christie get married. He calls me once again and I document their partnership. Another amazing time with my amazing friends, and their friends, who are also so nice. It must be an STL thing. A little more time goes by, Craig and Christie have kids, and they start to grow. Craig and the family get stuck in Dallas on the way to Montana, and I finally get to return the favor and have them stay with me. It’s only for a few hours, but enough to catch up and reminisce. We make plans to see each other soon. And now here we are, I go out once again to St. Louis and photograph their beautiful family. I’ve now chronicled their lives for over a decade and I cannot even begin to describe how special that means to me. The bond I have with them is one of the most genuine connections I’ve ever had. I love these two and their family and I am so grateful that they are in my life. Thank you for being my friends and for being my family.

It’s been quite a while since I have shot a wedding, but I could not pass up the opportunity to see two of my closest friends become life partners. I’ve known Chris since 2008, when he started @caterpillars_tx . I fortunate enough to meet him and then play drums in his project. Since then our lives have gone down different paths, but we saw each other along the way, supporting each other from afar. Now we are back as bandmates and rekindling the magic of playing together. What was a chance meeting to shoot some photos for him turned into a reigniting of our friendship and our mutual love for the music we created all those years ago. I was a bit nervous to meet Rebecca, but that quickly melted as I found a kindred spirit and sister. Our musical tastes align suspiciously close and she is a photo nerd as well. Even though we’ve only known each other for a little while, I feel like we’ve known each other longer than that, perhaps even in another lifetime. It was a pleasure capturing these moments for them, and seeing them in their favorite place. Thank you for introducing @mindyleebenitez and I to this wonderful place, as it now holds a special place in our hearts as well. Thanks always to my beautiful wife Mindy, for tolerating my OCD way of shooting and hauling my gear. She is one of the reasons trips like this are so much fun. Congratulations Chris and Rebecca! We Love You! #1886crescenthotel #eurekasprings #arkansas #weddingphotos #weddingphotographers #johnbenitezphotography

Getting ready to shoot an elopement session for my dear friend (and bandmate) in Eureka Springs, AR. His wonderful fiancée @sugarloaf_bottom_shanks was in possession of gently used Hasselblad 500CM medium format camera, and we thought it would be really nice to shoot some images while we were out there. The only problem was, neither of us knew how to use it. Admittedly, I was taught primarily on digital cameras and I found medium format a bit intimidating because of how complex it can be. I shot 35mm earlier in the summer and I had a lot of fun shooting that, so I decided to try to learn it. While I am still learning, I am falling in love with the process. Slowing down, intentionality, composition, metering light, developing, scanning; it’s such a slow and satisfying process. My personal work just became that much more personal. Knowing that I would eventually have to return the camera left me longing, so I ventured out and bought one of my own. I cannot wait to create meaningful, and intentional, memories for my friends, family, and clients. I’m hopeful that by moving backwards to move foward, my inspiration flourishes. #hasselblad #500cm #mediumformatfilm #portra400 #120mm #johnbenitezphotography
