reimagining through recombining
A sensitive retrofit that treats the building’s history as an active participant in its renewal. Here new slate treads are introduced as new elements ontop of a 1980’s concrete stair. This was done to reduce the steepness of the stair, while keeping what’s already there – arriving at something new through the combination of new and old.

For us, the stair is central to the experience of a home, where the progression is considered with care from the first step to the last. The journey is both seen and felt. A gentle curve at the top smoothly shapes not only what you look toward but how you move through. See from afar, the final three steps are one of several subtle moments of delight that animate the architecture.

The re-design of this derelict Edwardian artist studio was a unique opportunity to blend restoration with modernisation. The project reinstated the studio’s original volume, with high ceilings and typical north-facing skylights for natural, diffused light. A study mezzanine with stair and a large set of doors were added, maintaining openness and framing views of the Georgian property it was part of. We provided a full basement, that accommodated additional storage, a guest room and a drum kit. The original wall panelling was carefully removed, refurbished, and reinstalled, preserving its original finish. The result is a harmonious balance of history with new elements transforming the neglected space into a vibrant multi-purpose studio.

Double barrelled wood stove. One barrel for wood the other for roasts. Added an improved hob plate with water jet crosshairs to help with secondary burn. Remake of an existing one for a friend. The stove gets lined with firebricks but it's surprising how long a 1mm thick barrel lasts!

An example of our resourceful design process. Here we were tasked with improving the steepness of a stair. Our approach was to adapt and repurpose instead of replacing. Rather than remove the existing concrete structure, we introduced two additional steps by integrating a second layer - slate treads. This approach not only resolved the functional issue but also celebrated the contrast between old and new, with each step subtly unique—a testament to the beauty of using constraints for something new and unexpected. The materials are blacked steel, honed natural slate and doors made using book bindery techniques.

Space of transition
The entry hall for this new-build in North London serves as a pivotal point in the connection of spaces. It captures the harmonious flow of the layout, guided by a series of carefully placed arches. The use of a light colour limewash from Bauwerk binds the design together, imparting a sense of mass and timelessness, creating a welcoming and enduring whole.

Many years ago I made a loaf tin in the shape of Elvis' head for a Kingsmill promotion. Lucky purchasers of an Elvis bread got a trip to Graceland if I remember correctly. To avoid a packaged loaf from being felt up and recognised I made a smaller tin for his face contours so the 2 part loaf felt like a normal loaf (not shown). A fun thing to be involved in but it did attract some hostility from Elvis fans, not least from Sid Shaw the proprietor of 'Elvisly Yours' who in his petition against the promotion complained about people being encouraged to bite off his nose or chin and even toasting the King!
