How has it already been 2 WHOLE WEEKS since Foto Imprint?! 📚 Big thanks to everyone that stopped by to browse and chat, to @streetlevelphotoworks for having us, @kirstygmackay for signing fresh copies of The Magic Money Tree, @mallard_books for the excellent company, and to @j_a_laing for the low sodium night walk for members which was incredible despite storm Amy!
It was nice to be back behind the counter shouting about photographers' work so they don't have to - we're making plans to be popping up again somewhere exciting very soon (👀) but really enjoyed a weekend on the west coast and hope to be over that way more regularly.

“One of these days, you’re going to get into trouble,” Laura told me recently. She thinks my documentary-style photography is too intrusive.
Pablo agreed, suggesting that I should have a more ethical relationship to my subjects, maybe even engage them.
Ethics was a hot topic at the Cameras and Coffee meetup.
Weirdly my old post on street photography ethics has become the most popular thing on The Crop.
This week I have also been immersed in the work of Thomas Joshua Cooper and Roger Palmer, both of whose approach to Photography resists the transactional and anthropological. You don’t take a photo, you make it, said Ansel Adams.
I take all this on board. Maybe I had to get it out of my system. The aim is always to become more intentional. Or perhaps I can take photos of shadows like Dylan was the other day.
The other topic I have been thinking about this week is Glasgow’s sculpture, after an enlightening talk by Colin M Drysdale at New Glasgow Society.
At least sculptures don’t complain.
FILM UND FOTO KLUB returns on Tues 13 August! 🍿 For this instalment we'll be screening Rettet das Feuer (Rescue The Fire) (2019) by Jasco Viefhues, alongside a Q&A between John Farrel (@john__farrell__ ) and Dr Cole Collins (@dr_cole_collins ).
About the film // In the early 1990s, the AIDS epidemic reached its tragic peak. The Berlin photographer and artist Jürgen Baldiga was directly affected: while he himself was fighting the HIV virus, he had to watch entire circles of friends disappear. Baldiga became a chronicler of his time until his death in 1993. 25 years later, director Jasco Viefhues met Baldiga's companions and combined the conversations with a wealth of photos and archive material. The result is a portrait of an idiosyncratic artist, and at the same time a documentary about the AIDS crisis and life in the gay scene in West Berlin at the time. 🎟️ Entry is by donation and you've gotta book to attend! About the speaker // Dr. Cole Collins (he/him) works on queer, feminist and working-class German art, artistic movements, activism and politics. He is currently working on an exhibition of queer collage and another on the photography of Jürgen Baldiga.

For over a year, Gereon Wetzel and Jörg Adolph filmed on site at Düstere Strasse 4 in Göttingen, recording first-hand the organized chaos that is daily working life at Steidl Publishers. From book concept to design, from editorial and prepress to printing, the film exposes the craft of bookmaking today.
Join us in the basement for anther photo film screening, plus optional mug of microwave popcorn and some post-film chat about what it all means in the wider 'photo land' picture.
