20 years of the d.school - Confluence, John Edmark, 2025
Rolled Steel Tube, Yarn, Taper Pins 12’ x 17’
Composed of two steel tubes connected with 456 pieces of yarn and 912 taper pins, Confluence is a morphing hyperboloid that embodies the disparate trajectory of d schoolers. Each person, like each string, has a unique starting point. They wind together while at the d.school, and then launch back into the world, each in their own unique way.
Chairs designed and fabricated by graduate students for a course I co-teach with Jaye Buchbinder and Craig Milroy in Stanford's ME Department. Students were required to make their chairs collapsible/disassemblable, and to be transformed in less than one minute. Video shows them transforming their chairs at a recent exhibition at @EmecoHouse in Los Angeles. Students produced the chairs at the @StanfordPRL .

This logarithmic spiral is furled and unfurled by pulling and releasing a string that passes through the inner radius of each section. Because the spiral is logarithmic, all the pieces of the spiral are similar (i.e. the same shape).

Blooms are 3D printed sculptures designed to animate when spun under a strobe light. Unlike a 3D zoetrope, which animates a sequence of small changes to objects, a bloom animates as a single self-contained sculpture. The bloom’s animation effect is achieved by progressive rotations of the golden ratio, phi (ϕ), the same ratio that nature employs to generate the spiral patterns we see in pinecones and sunflowers. The rotational speed and strobe rate of the bloom are synchronized so that one flash occurs every time the bloom turns 137.5º (the angular version of phi). #JohnEdmark #EdmarkBlooms

Curling Spiral—Outer Spine

Changing the angle between the two sides of this spiral causes it to furl and unfurl. Each of the frames fits exactly inside the next larger frame; all the frames were cut from just two pieces of plywood the size of the largest frame.
