A Cryptid is a creature which may or may not exist, unrecognised by mainstream science. Cryptozoology is a pseudoscience, which primarily looks at anecdotal stories, and other claims rejected by the scientific community. An astonishing 86% of all plants and animals on land and 91% of those in the seas have yet to be named and catalogued. With the majority of life in the sea unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored there are millions of ‘Cryptids’ out there – this project is a speculation on these creatures alongside those that have been ‘captured’ and catalogued by mankind.
INTERSPECIES LIBRARY: Cryptozoology Section

Cryptozoology (Greek: kryptós, hidden / zōion, animal / logos, study) is a research field concerned with hidden, unknown, undetected, uncatalogued, and out-of-place beings.
The Interspecies Library: Cryptozoology Section highlights a selection of contemporary literature and artists’ books exploring aquatic, terrestrial, hominid, aerial, and exobiological cryptids, as well as the cultural, historical and scientific implications of their potential existence.

We're excited to reveal this new work by artist Joey Holder, made for the Institute's exterior, as part of Phantasmagoria: Folkloric Sculpture for the Digital Age.
Emblazoned on the black granite façade is Cazimi 2026, a collective sigil conceived by Joey Holder to assemble elements from each artist exhibiting in Phantasmagoria.
A cazimi occurs when a planet appears to pass through the exact heart of the sun in direct motion: a rare alignment understood in astrology as a moment of exceptional clarity and grounded materialisation.
The work was completed to mark the Mercury cazimi of 14 May 2026, at 23° Taurus, the moment of the exhibition’s opening. Its triptych structure is a historically devotional form recalling an altarpiece designed to open a threshold between the viewer and a sacred or supernatural realm. Cazimi’s surface emulates ancient stone, suggesting a Mesopotamian tablet, votive object or alchemical diagram.

Exploring mutant femme energy, queer club culture, body autonomy and the liberating power of movement, the project draws from experimental bass, industrial techno, baile funk and granular, spatial sound design to challenge how femininity, sensuality and the body are framed within club spaces.
Through dance, costume, visual art and sound, Moult Mouth forges new forms of embodied expression. The music becomes a site of release – where teeth bare, bodies expand and movement becomes a declaration of autonomy.
