Memory Well 1: Mourning Chorus
A listening device that aims to summarise memories of bird life from visitors in the gallery, hybridising their migratory calls into a new chorus. This installation approaches field recorders as stages for performance, creating evolving sound never quite captured. I wanted to create something that auto-curates, allowing visitors to immediately hear themselves weaved into the work, something that breaks down and shifts like my own memories.
This was presented at Dilston Grove gallery alongside really inspiring artists I’ve had the chance to learn from over the last year as part of the ‘Whose voices will announce it?’ Exhibition.
ARRAN
(Cassette, radio into 404 samplers)
See the full 10 minute set in bio
Some music I made a while ago, I wanted to turn into a more fluid format- live looping whatever was on the radio, as well as a long list of voices picked up while trying to field record.
I got the chance to use these samplers for a couple months and wanted to look into my own archive, my memory is pretty terrible so I wanted to do something with that.
ULTRAHYDROSONIC
Combining ultrasonic speakers and hydrophones, this installation gave me the chance to explore the Teeside areas underwater environment. With help from @teeswildlife I got to capture seal talk, marshland life and the work of the @teesriverstrust as they reintroduce Oysters to the Hartlepool Marina.
These recordings were layered into a journey between these three spaces and shown in our Hill Street Shopping Centre Submarine, mingling with the sounds of shoppers, turning passers-by into flowing currents and schools of fish.
Stay tuned for more pictures and future incarnations of the project.

📡SAW25 Artist Announcement | Joe Browning
We are pleased to announce that @joebrowniing was selected for this year's Ultrasonic Commission. Joe is a Sound Artist orientated in communal collaboration to interact with and generate archives. He is interested in the exchange of agency between human, more-than human, 'past' and 'present' in the creation of sound work.
Through installations and performances, Joe combines these elements as co-creators across the UK and internationally. These interactions are facilitated through field recording, original productions and devising techniques.
🌊🫧Listen out for Joe's Ultrahydrosonic sound piece ready to plunge you underwater in Hillstreet Shopping centre for this year's festival.
