As part of the first of three events in Art Impact Project’s Prism Series, I spoke about the art–brain connection: how art fosters neural plasticity, and how the process of making art may support anti-inflammatory and healthy aging processes. It was the first time I truly got to bring my two worlds — neuropsychology and art — together in one space. I even showed some paintings!

It's been quite a week of programming at Art Impact Project! And our event was the perfect ending to the week! The atmosphere the attendees created at the first of the Prism events, ART:BRAIN Connection, was amazing! Meet @joalidasmit A large-scale oil painter whose journey back to art is as powerful as her work.
Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Joalida built a career as a clinical and neuropsychologist before rediscovering painting later in life. Her work features bold, expressive florals and nature-based imagery that explore themes of transformation, femininity, vulnerability, and the passage of time. She is a perfect IL artist to teach with those O’keeffe lessons!
Beyond the canvas, Joalida blends her background in psychology with art—offering classes and immersive creative experiences that connect mindfulness, movement, and making.
