The story behind Jo.Ke’s “Who Loves The Sun”?!
Jo.Ke was in Berlin, his first marriage was imploding, he was one year into his cooking apprenticeship, and he had just become the father of a young daughter. One rainy night, riding home from the restaurant kitchen just before crossing the Spree, he was hit by a car. He came out severely injured: two broken toes on one foot, a sprained ankle on the other side, and 35 stitches in his right ear. He could not walk without crutches or carry much at home, which made an already painful period feel even heavier.
On the first beautiful spring day of the year, heart and body broken, he looked out at the sun. That is when the new melody of “Who Loves The Sun” came to him. It arrived almost randomly, as he started singing to himself.
He called a friend who was working as a music producer close by, intending to record the melody a cappella, just to unload some of the weight from his chest. Once there, he heard a beat playing from the laptop speakers and suggested singing over it. They recorded the vocal in one long improvised take, pouring out his heart. A few days later the arrangement was finished, and already during the first public sharings in small underground Berlin events, it connected immediately and started building momentum.
That is why the song feels so strange and strong: it is technically a dance track, but emotionally it comes from heartbreak, injury, and the rebirth of spring.
It was the first time Jo.Ke had his voice recorded and tapped into stream-of-consciousness song catching, instead of writing lyrics. The important self-therapy of sublimation: personal pain turned into hope. The song ended up helping many other people through their own grief and despair, and it also musicalized so many festival and afterhour memories, from sunset to sunrise, from sunrise to sunset.
So excited to share that we will soon release our new album, Home Alone.
