Cara Lia,
Ci mancherai immensamente
When I am looking for answers about human relationships, Hélène Cixous never fails to answer poignantly.
Le Rire de la Méduse, her foundational essay from 1975, has inspired this month’s episode of BilderAtlas Sounds.
It’s a collection of musical moments that have touched me in these past months — fragments of encounters that made me question the roles we play in the ever-shifting game of love and desire. Cixous’ Gorgon, the powerful and terrifying woman, is “beautiful, and laughing.” As she gets older, she rejuvenates. She radiates jouissance, a psychic energy that refuses to be contained. And that is all we need.
Here’s a quote from the book I particularly love:
“Beauty will no longer be forbidden.
I wished that that woman would write and proclaim this unique empire so that other women, other unacknowledged sovereigns, might exclaim: I, too, overflow; my desires have invented new desires, my body knows unheard-of songs. Time and again I, too, have felt so full of luminous torrents that I could burst, burst with forms much more beautiful than those which are put up in frames and sold for a stinkin fortune. And I, too, said nothing, showed nothing; I didn’t open my mouth, I didn’t repaint my half of the world. I was ashamed. I wa afraid, and I swallowed my shame and my fear. I said to myself: You are mad!”

I took this image before moving into my new apartment. I hardly take photographs at present, but images by others are the constellations of my days.
Even much so this year, that thanks to some beautiful projects and encounters has been incredible, rewarding, powerful. Here’s to making new-old photographs visibile, collectible and cherished in 2026, and to finding love within ourselves and with others through the passions that guide us.
