We are so incredibly overjoyed to introduce our son, Copper Alexander Martin NoiseCat, to our families, friends, and the world. Copper was born on the territory of the Semiahmoo First Nation in White Rock, British Columbia at 5:08pm on April 29, 2026. He’s a big healthy boy, weighing 9 lb 4 oz, 54 cm long with a full head of dark hair.
Mama Joanie labored and delivered surrounded by family all natural with no drugs and without a single scream following the strong traditions of many Tsimshian matriarchs before. It was incredible for all to witness.
We cannot wait for our son to meet his many Tsimshian, Nisga’a, Tlingit, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Secwépemc, St’at’imc, Irish, and Jewish relatives from California to the Yukon and beyond. Thank you to all our chosen family and friends who have shared love, gifts, and strength. We hope these captures convey a bit of the beauty we have experienced this week.
🤲🏽 Xwexwéyt te kwseltkten. All our relations. 🤲🏽
Had a great time in New York with Joan, our almost born son, my mom, and my stepdad celebrating WE SURVIVED THE NIGHT at the @penamerica literary awards. Congratulations to all the winners, especially my buddy @cannupahanska who took home the big one on behalf of all us ndn survivors.
A story about Coyote. A story about family. A story about what nearly gets lost, and what can be remembered.
At #Bioneers2026, Julian Brave NoiseCat brought oral tradition to life as a living, evolving way of understanding history, identity, and survival.

Writer, filmmaker, champion powwow dancer – renowned creative Julian Brave Noisecat (@jnoisecat ) is joining us at Indian Summer 2026.
In his debut novel "We Survived the Night," an immediate National bestseller, Julian grapples with the erasure of North America’s First Peoples and the trauma that cascades across generations while illuminating the vital Indigenous cultural, environmental, and political movements shaping the future, through a dazzling blend of history and mythology, memoir and reportage.
It paints a profound and unforgettable portrait of contemporary Indigenous life alongside an intimate, deeply powerful reckoning between a father and a son.
Join us on Friday July 10 at Waterfront Theatre for a conversation between Julian and our Executive Artist Director Am Johal, with a book signing to follow. 🎟️
Thank you to @granville_island and SFU's David Lam Centre for supporting this event.
We asked @jnoisecat “your mom gets murdered. The killer’s punishment is being forced to watch one movie on loop for life. What movie do you sentence them to?”

How can we make Indigenous peoples and their histories more visible?
You could feel the collective awe in the room listening to Julian Brave Noisecat’s (@jnoisecat ) keynote address at @bioneers conference 2026. Julian is the author of We Survived the Night and director alongside Emily Kassie of the documentary Sugarcane, a powerful investigation into abuse and missing children at the Indian residential school his own family was sent to.
It was an honor to be in conversation with him. His words reminded us why it matters so deeply to uplift and center Indigenous voices, to truly understand the history of the place we are settlers on.
I’m grateful to have heard the stories he shared during the panel “Indigenous Forum- We survived the apocalypse: Lessons in Resilience” alongside the amazing Gary Farmer (@garytroublemaker_official ) , Natalie Ball, and moderated by Cara Romero (@cararomerophotography )

💔 “This is how they took the land, this is what they did to our children, this is why it us uncommon to hear indigenous languages, to see native cultures, that is how the colonization was done.”
