I have spent the last few days photographing an exhibition at @macaal_ in Marrakesh that deals and attempts to grapple with an immense and ongoing tragedy.
The installation, ‘Statues Also Breathe’, consists of 108 terracotta heads; each one represents a specific young woman kidnapped from Chibok, Nigeria, by Boko Haram in 2014.
My role was to document the installation as well as the visit of Angelina Jolie alongside representatives and collaborators of the Catharsis Arts Foundation.
At the museum I also had the profound opportunity of photographing and meeting two survivors of the kidnapping, Rahab and Margaret. It is a difficult thing to reconcile their quiet, gracious manner with the fact of what they endured. Meeting them, along with Moyo Bateye, Professor Mike, Mr. Nkeki and Ade Bantu, made it clear that for those involved, this project also gives credence to what might, hopefully soon, be achieved: the return of every remaining student to their parents.
Thanks again for having me on this project:
