Here is James’ story about the striking cover artwork, painted by @asoppsfables Alex Sopp:
“This album of Bach’s Clavier-übung III has been a long time coming. I learnt some of CÜ3 as a teenager, and first performed the whole collection in my early 20s. Recorded in the dead of winter 2017, and sat on my hard drive in a near completed state for the years since, it has become like an old friend. Most of my recordings to date have been in the sphere of contemporary music, often presenting works that have been written in collaboration with composer friends. For a long time I’ve felt the need to release a project that fills in the gaps, if you like; after all, Bach’s music forms a central part of my musical makeup that’s been there right from the start. And so this feels a deeply personal album. This is what I think music sounds like.
Turning my thoughts to the album art, I realised, what could be more personal than a portrait of my face, painted by a friend, as the cover image. I’ve loved Alex Sopp’s work as an artist since I saw her portrait of English composer Herbert Howells, painted for our mutual friend Nico Muhly. Alex is one of those people whose creative forces know no bounds: a NYC-based flautist working at the intersection of contemporary classical and pop music, she’s also songwriter, singer and a painter. Founding member of yMusic, The Knights, NOW Ensemble, and the Berlin-based Between Worlds Ensemble she regularly performs across the globe with artists such as Paul Simon, John Legend, Ben Folds, and Anohni. Her debut album of “fresh and singular…utterly seductive” (The Wire) original songs, “The Hem & The Haw” was released to much critical acclaim on New Amsterdam Records in Spring of 2024. I’m ever grateful to Alex for the portrait.”

The fabulous James McVinnie @jmcvinnie in live performance at St Andrew Holborn, London, of with J.S. Bach: Prelude in E flat BWV 552i, a piece that also features on his new album ‘Bach: Clavier-Übung III’ - out now!
In James own words: “I first heard Bach’s Prelude & Fugue in E-Flat as a young teenager, played by a visiting recitalist in concert at Westminster Abbey. Time has erased most of the details of my first visit to this extraordinary building, but some remain: the Abbey’s Waterford crystal chandeliers, strangely reminiscent of Joan Collins’s earrings — Martin Neary, the then Abbey Organist in his red cassock, black gown and white preaching bands — the enormous polished Purbeck marble columns of the nave… What sticks out most though is the final section of the Fugue, culminating in its thundering final pedal entry; for me, a thrilling, life changing moment and surely one of Bach’s most inspired conclusions.” James McVinnie

“It is universally acknowledged by all organists that the best stop on any organ is the acoustic it’s in. Whilst this is undoubtedly unfair to the noble art of organ building, it is certainly true that the Aa - kerk’s extraordinary reverberation enhances the sound of its organ with an unusual vibrancy. Painstaking care was taken in the engineering of this recording; I wanted it to sound as if the pipes were speaking into listeners’ ears at close quarters with a crystalline sound, allowing the music to speak in minute detail, without losing the sense of the instrument’s thrilling acoustic habitat —one of intense presence and also great spaciousness of sound” @jmcvinnie
