The Bowness streetcar has captured my imagination from the first time I heard about it! From 1913 to 1950 a streetcar ran from downtown Calgary to Bowness Park. The Calgary Municipal Railway ran the park as a way to turn the Bowness line into a paying one after the 1913 collapse of a luxury development scheme. “All melded together on the streetcar—squatters and businessmen, professionals and tradesmen, stock brokers and the unemployed,” writes Valentine Urie in Bowness: Our Village in the Valley. “All rode the streetcar. It was the ultimate leveller—a club where no one was excluded.” I wrote about the streetcar and Bowness Park in my latest dispatch for The Sprawl. Link in bio! I routinely feel like a complete moron when taking out The Sprawl’s Pop-Up Press and riding around and printing in some public place. But do it anyway. Why do we do what we do!!! Anyway here’s some of what I was printing today

My latest in The Sprawl as Calgary city council is poised to cut the free fare zone. Too long to post it all here so here are a few highlights. Read the whole thing if you dare - link in bio!

C-TRAIN IS FREE ALONG 7 AVENUE. This @calgarytransit ad ran in the Calgary Herald on May 28, 1981, when the CTrain first opened.

Man I have been ranting about Calgary Transit for some time now! These newspaper clippings are 20+ years old but you could re-run (some of) them today. Today I looked at Calgary Transit’s new RouteAhead update, which says that transit ridership did not increase in 2025 from 2024. In fact it went slightly down. That got me thinking about how long I’ve been writing about this stuff. The more things change etc. (Articles are from @inthereflector and FFWD.)

A day of Calgary streetcars! In the morning I did my @janeswalkcalgary on the forgotten history of the CTrain. In the afternoon I took The Sprawl’s Pop-Up Press out for a rip. Set up the press so people could print a 1920s photo of streetcars crossing the Bow River into Hillhurst on 10 St NW. This thing gives me an excuse to meet all kinds of Calgarians and have interesting conversations with them. A good day. Jane’s Walk photos by @heather.astro
