I saw Henry Flynt in Brussels in 2009 inside the never too praised “Kraak Festival”. Over the top performance, disconcerting, guitar on the run and lunar hillbilly. Today a handful of instigators from the gentrified downtown New York have decided to green their glory. Flynt is alive and well but he is well taken not to show himself in public, the baton passes to what was once the rhythm engine of Circus Mort/Swans, Jonathan Kane, who had already delighted us with his maximalist rock’n’roll publications on Table Of The Elements. With members - among others - of Sunwatchers and the violinist David Soldier (New York multi-instrumentalist of avant/contemporary extraction) stage a tribute for nothing calligraphic inside the vaults of the Methodist Church. It’s deeply New York music that synthesizes no wave and Fluxus, minimalism and bluegrass. The intensity of the transpositions betrays a solid post-punk background and the impression is that of being in front of Faust amphetamines (with Tony Conrad of course) or the first Velvet trapped in a noise storm. It’s hard to stay still between the benches of the atypical location, we’ll hear about this team for a long time and - allow me - on the wings of enthusiasm to Kane I would like to give the nickname of Keith Moon of the avant-rock!... In this fabulous double bill, the opening touches the one who made a flag of the corrosive irony, Dr. Eugene Chadbourne. Banjo or electric (not distorted) depending on the occasion, among songs of his conception and cover duly contextualized: Compassion and Dear Lord (John Coltrane), Sacrifice (Motörhead), Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers) and Old Violin (Johnny Paycheck). Sono un vero e proprio “supergruppo” di New York, composto da musicisti provenienti da ambiti come il minimalismo, il rock sperimentale e la free improvisation. Tra i membri il batterista Jonathan Kane, membro fondatore degli Swans, collaboratore di La Monte Young e noto per il suo lavoro con figure chiave dell’avanguardia newyorkese e Dave Soldiers violinista e neuroscienziato tra le altre cose collaboratore di David Byrne e John Cale. La formazione inoltre comprende: Jim McHugh – chitarra e voce (Sunwatchers) Peter Kerlin – basso (Sunwatchers, Chris Forsyth) Meredith McHugh - percussioni e voce (Smoke Bellow) Peg Simone – tastiere Per capire gli Everloving bisogna partire da Flynt. Attivo nella New York degli anni ’60, Flynt è stato un teorico e inventore del termine “concept art”, attivista anti - istituzionale, musicista che ha fuso blues rurale, musica hillbilly, raga indiano e minimalismo. La sua idea di “New American Ethnic Music” mirava a superare le barriere tra cultura alta e popolare, creando una musica fisica, ipnotica e profondamente ibrida. Gli Everloving prendono questo materiale e lo portano in una dimensione collettiva. Se Flynt spesso lavorava da solista (violino elettrico + drone), il gruppo trasforma i brani in esperienze di ensemble, accentuandone il lato “rock” e spingendo verso una dimensione più festiva e partecipativa. Non si tratta di cover fedeli, ma di una “espansione” della visione di Flynt, quasi a realizzare ciò che lui stesso immaginava: una band capace di attraversare liberamente country, blues, funk e sperimentazione. Trasformano l’avanguardia di Henry Flynt in un’esperienza collettiva, elettrica e contemporanea, sospesa tra tradizione americana e sperimentazione.
