Stonethrowers unearths the overlooked role of women in the 1916 miners’ strike on the Greek island of Serifos, a pivotal uprising that led to the establishment of the eight-hour workday in Greece. At its heart is Aikaterini Valsamaki, a key yet largely forgotten figure of the rebellion at the Mega Livadi iron mines, who was imprisoned for her defiance. The film weaves memory, myth and feminist defiance, linking the stone-throwing women to the petrifying power of Medusa’s gaze, engraved in the island’s landscape.
“Stonethrowers,” an experimental documentary by Sofia Dona, has its Greek premiere within the festival’s Reframing Images competition section, implemented in collaboration with ARTWORKS.The film is commissioned by Archipelago Network in collaboration with Kotoki Art Space, and produced in the context of the project “Extraction in the Cyclades: Digital Traces.” The work explores the little-known history of the crucial role women played in the 1916 Serifos miners’ strike.

S.t.m.C. and Stellka present an experimental live audio performance based on field recordings. Through a back-to-back flow, they weave two parallel bodies of sound that converse and collide. Gradually, their sonic worlds intertwine, unfolding a shared narrative of shifting landscapes, textures, and rhythms. As the entanglements deepen, unexpected encounters emerge that invite into an open field of exploration.
🔷 𝗦.𝘁.𝗺.𝗖 (Athens) is a musician, sound artist, and field recordist. With a background in architecture and urban culture her work explores the sonic identity of urban and natural environments, the timbres and rhythms of everyday life, inviting audiences to experience sound as a transformative, spatial, illuminating and emotional encounter.

GLORIOUS EPIC
By Sofia Mavragani
A tragic duet on the stage of ALCATRAZ STRIP CLUB
A glorious, epic dance performance.
01-04 JUNE 2024
At 19:00
The tragic duet "Glorious Epic" is a stormy kinetic narrative conveying passions, desires, feelings and thoughts from ancient times repositioned in a different setting in the contemporary art scene. It is the heroic moment when one body takes on the form of a dyad in a celebration of the vibrant power of diversity. Secondary actions take center stage, transformed from supporting roles to the stars of the scene, creating a poetic allegory about the beauty of mismatching. Sofia Mavragani blends past with present and performance with reality. Two bodies; two worlds; an epic encounter between contemporary dance and Athens’ most famous strip club.
