I’m excited to announce Gallants • my new album. Pre-order now on CD, lucky dip ecomix vinyl or download. Link in bio!
My first album of new material in seven years, with contributions from friends such as Archie Churchill Moss, David Le Page (Orchestra Of The Swan), Maddie Morris and members of Trans Voices who sing harmonies on the closing track. Mastered by Stephen Kerrison at @permanent_collection_studio , and cover photograph by @robinclewleyphotography
Pre-ordering is genuinely helpful to support me and make the album a success. I can’t wait for you to hear it!
Gallants has landed at no. 26 in this week’s Official Independent Albums chart, and no. 8 on the breakers chart. (And 78 in the actual albums chart…). My highest charting album to date. Lovely stuff. If you want to order it, stream it, or just tell a friend before the end of the month, that’d be very helpful.
Things I made for our live session, part 1 - the intro to Flora (The Lily Of The West) was played on an Ikea seat pad with brushes, and a caxixi shaker overdub. After a bit of searching for shakers with handles that could be held in the same hand as drumsticks I found these ones in Gloucester Services of all places. I 3D printed these spacers to hold them to the brushes, and then got @stuart_provan to play on a drum stool top held on a snare stand. Worked pretty well I think. #moreseatpadinmyheadphonesplease
The whole session is up to watch now. Link in my bio!
🎸🎶🌙 To celebrate the release of Gallants, @jimmoray is sharing a live performance of The Nightingale — recorded at The Arch, a 140-year-old former church in Southport, with his full live band: Stuart Provan, JJ Stoney, Lukas Drinkwater, and Phill Ward.
The video is taken from a complete live session of the album, filmed by Robin Clewley (who created the Gallants artwork) and engineered by Tom Dring. As Moray explains: “I really wanted to make a record of how the songs sound played live without the pressure of an audience or a festival soundcheck.”
The Nightingale was collected in 1892 from Charles Lolley in Driffield, East Yorkshire, by folk song collector Frank Kidson. On this recording, Moray plays a 1959 Harmony Mars guitar fitted with a rubber bridge — a sound somewhere between guitar, banjo, and kora.
The full live session premieres at 8pm on Sunday May 3rd on YouTube. Free to watch, with a pay-what-you-want donation ticket available via Jim’s website — entering you into a prize draw for signed test pressings, t-shirts, mugs, and an offcut from the Gallants jacket.
Watch the video and read more about the full session at klofmag.com.
