Honored to have been invited to speak last Friday at @newroadsschool in a special multi-generational conversation curated by my friend—the incredible artist @jamesjeanart .
James brought together myself and the immensely talented artist/actor/creator @laurentsai to discuss our creative and professional journeys, all moderated by @ericnakamura , founder of @giantrobotstore here in LA.
I told James even before the event began that I was happy enough just to listen to what he and Lauren had to share from a front row vantage point.
Their perspectives were inspiring, insightful, and surprisingly resonant with my own experiences. What made the evening even more meaningful was discovering that James had intentionally brought us together during AAPI Heritage Month—sharing that he had been influenced by my work as a young artist (check out his X-Men 1cover homage), while Lauren had in turn been inspired by James. And all of us were inspired by Lauren’s fearless creativity and unique path.
I especially loved speaking with the students—ranging from ages 5 to 15—and seeing how genuinely curious and passionate they were about art, storytelling, and creative expression.
A truly special morning, and I can’t thank James enough for all the thought and work he put into this lovely event.
Well, the 2026 Eisner nominations are in!
DC Comics led the field this year with 16 (‼️) nominations plus 10 shared nominations—our strongest showing in recent memory and, as far as I can recall, a modern-era record for DC.
Leading the way were Absolute Martian Manhunter with 6 nominations and Absolute Batman with 5. Huge congratulations to all the incredible creators, editors, designers, marketing, sales, publicity, and production teams whose hard work made this possible.
On a personal note, I was especially thrilled to see legendary letterer Janice Chiang nominated this year. Janice lettered my very first Big Two professional work—Alpha Flight #51 way, way back in 1987 and has been one of the absolute best in the business ever since. Congrats on the well-deserved nomination, Janice, and best of luck! 💙❤️
If Batman is going to survive Hush's revenge, he's going to have to team up with...a group that wants him dead? BATMAN # 163 the H2SH Part One Finale is one you're not gonna want to miss.
Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing wife @joke2far , my mother Moon Ja, and our daughters Brittany and Siena who all celebrated our first Mother’s Day welcoming four generations into our family!
I think (hope) my wife’s ideal day is simply having the family together, spending time doing the little everyday things that somehow become the most meaningful memories.
We started the day with a lovely breakfast that our daughter @kaitlinleegarza brought over to the house followed by walking the neighborhood in search of cold brew, then swimming, grilling meats for a backyard BBQ at our new place (more on this later), and ending the night with a movie at home. Thanks also to our daughter @kelseyhannah__ who drove up from SD with her trademark delicious chocolate chip cookies and scones for dessert!
It’s wild to me how this family continues to grow and thrive, and how my wife somehow manages and balances it all with so much love, care, and grace.
She’s there for every recital, every practice, every sporting event… always cheering them on, always selfless, always giving more of herself to the people she loves.
She makes me want to be a better man, father, and partner every day ❤️
Wishing our son @masonbacon.png and his best friend of over a decade+ @remylean the happiest 21st birthdays this past April. It's #freecomicbookday, and I'm reflecting on the comics that changed my life for the better. These works of art may not be free, but their impact is beyond measure. They inspired me as a very young fan to learn English, to draw and create, and provided an amazing escape when the world around me felt unwelcoming and chaotic.
From trades to reprints, I consumed them all, but the originals—these totemic icons for the nerd class—were the ultimate holy grails. Like any amazing work of art, I literally hear the heavenly ‘Bat Kol’ when I gaze upon their Divine Countenance…(the true meaning of DC Comics? 🙂)
Thank you @cgc and @brittwilltravel for helping me make this lifelong dream a reality. I remain forever grateful and blessed 🙌🙌🙌

This past Saturday, April 25, we celebrated *both* my beautiful wife Carla’s birthday—and welcomed our first grandbaby, Timber Joseph Sargent, into our growing family! 🌟🌟🌟
That date has always carried weight for Carla. She lost her grandmother on her 14th birthday, and 30 years later, laid her mom to rest in terra firma on that same day. So Timber arriving on April 25 feels especially meaningful—a day of birth which is now shared across generations, and a reminder that one life’s story is bigger than just any single moment. 🙌
Please join me in congratulating our daughter Brittany and her husband Brandon on their beautiful baby boy. (And yes—“Timber” is a nod to Brittany’s love of Tim Burton). 🌳
PS—all the flowers for Brittany for powering through 38 hours of excruciating labor, and to Carla—who stayed by her side all night, then somehow made it to Vegas on one hour of sleep to cheer on our other kids who wanted to check out both System of a Down at their Sick New World festival and the LVL up Expo! Both absolute rock stars! 🤘
PPS—I can’t believe I’m married to a grandma. 😉
