Udon at Mitsuwa. She’d hate this photo, but notice the onigiri in her hand. The border of the photo is due to a broken spring in my camera. I’m trying out a Minilux and have since retuned it.

Kind of a funny sequence. My mother watching The Dodgers in a hotel room in Japan. The games are on fairly early in the morning, and all of the games are televised.

That’s my mother and Charlette walking down a hill leading to a family burial vault that’s on a sprawling farm property in Kyushu. This photo is an older one and a reminder that people need help and we don’t always realize it.

That’s @laurentsai sitting in a tiny park in Nakameguro. I shot just a few frames and caught the kid on the swing. LT’s art exhibition, The Dying World at Hollywood Forever Cemetery presents a stop motion animation featuring her character, Astrid. The room itself puts you into the setting of her story. The next room features an installation of drawings, paintings, and the animation set itself. Everything is contained in a replica of her childhood home. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve logged in here. I’m perhaps dozens of photos behind. The fun part is reliving those times while searching through the rolls. I’ll post things way out of chronological order.

The large drawing was amazing and I’m glad to have caught the last day of the @katsuyaterada exhibition at @mograggallery in Tokyo. The silhouette is nice. In the second photo I see @coni_x and I met @genksrb and in the third it might be hard to see, it was dark. The location has a window and it’s as if it’s a counter. I wonder what the business was a long time ago?

It turns out that this fella is the son of my grandfathers youngest brother and that makes him a first cousin once removed. My grandfather passed at 96 when I was quite young. So I kept thinking this person was a grandson, but no, his kid like face is part of a 60 something year old man. The side of family he is on, I know little about. In fact I had no idea he existed. It turns out that he’s a Buddhist monk and has his own mini temple at his house. Does anyone know what’s written behind him? Surely it’s a sutra? I pointed out the Amabie in the second photo who first appeared in… Kumamoto where we were at. I wonder if that’s why he kept that on his wall (aside it looking cool) He then performed some type of sutra chant and repeatedly hit a drum. If you look closely at the fourth pic you can see how much he smiles. I’d say he’s cute character. The last pic is of Charlette and the blurry background is an area that wasn’t supposed to be photographed but I found that out later. It’s blurry so it’s ok right? The same thing happens as my previous photo posting. Will I ever see this person again? Will I ever make it to that area again in remote Kumamoto? Probably not! My head was in a super fog and it’s all a blurry memory. The photos actually help bring these back to life.

Inside the giant reclining Buddha are multiple features. Sadly no monk apartments but one can “visit” the 88 Shikoku temples all at once. There’s also a massive ojuzu (prayer beaded bracelet) If I was hearing things right, one of the deepest rooms had more than one volunteer watching out and had a piece of a bone from Buddha. #nanzointemple #nanzoinbuddha #nanzoin #buddha

It’s always weird when you visit family far away and kind of know that this might be the last time you see them. I last visited them in the 90s and after multiple trips to Japan I never made it to Fukuoka until this year. If you look closely at the second and third photo, Nobuo is saying goodbye through a dark window.

My mother sits second from the right with her cousins and a couple of neighbors from way way back in Shinden, Fukuoka Japan. The place is next to a Shrine.

The Nanzoin Temple Buddha is huge as it lies across your view. It’s supposedly the largest bronze statue and also supposedly created with the money that was won via lottery by a monk. The temple is in Kyushu Japan. #temple #buddha #buddhastatue #nanzointemple #kyushu #japan
