JIJEI BERLIN: For the last leg of the JIJEI tour we’ve partnered with MEGABOCK to bring you ten hours of some of the crudest and rudest Brazilian funk, the likes of which has yet to reach many ears this side of the Atlantic. JIJEI PRESENTS: Bad Bitch Music Through their hybrid DJ/MC performance, London-based duo Bad Bitch Music (BBM) fuse elements of underground rap, UK electronic music and other afro-diasporic styles in a entirely unexpected way. This wide-reaching mix of sounds does not come from an unwillingness to be part of a bigger scene. BBM are firmly planted in the tradition of British soundsystem culture and Black British party music. Through their selections and lyrics BBM shape that tradition to the current moment. Expect to hear a mix of original tracks, edits, classics and undiscovered gems, in which the though-line is big beats and sex-driven lyrics. JIJEI HEADLINER #2: Xavisphone Xavisphone is the funk alias of Xavi, a multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated producer of Brazilian origin based in Los Angeles. Despite having a sound all his own, Xavisphone’s output can most easily be described as Ritmado, gritty underground SP funk taken to the rhythmic extreme. Musicologist Thiago De Souza calls the style an “electronic drum circle”– twisted, resonant percussive loops fight for space around blasts of bass and chopped-up vocal refrains. The rules of conventional song structure and sonic balance used in Xavi’s collaborations with the likes of Ariana Grande are subverted and turned on their head with Xavisphone: listening through his multiple daily SoundCloud drops gives the sense that a proficient and acclaimed industry artist has given himself the opportunity to run wild and take his ideas to the absolute limit. JIJEI HEADLINER #1: MC ZKW As a vocalist and tastemaker, MC ZKW is proof of SP funk’s ability to endlessly renew itself. He has helped transform the Automotivo sound he is most closely associated with since his debut in 2022. Along with collaborators like DJ RD DA DZ7 and DJ DUH 011, he has ushered in a new era in the genre: the signature hard-hitting 4x4 kicks have remained but rolling percussion and a smoother, lighter sound have replaced the previous dark fantasy aesthetics and sharp synth melodies. His September 2024 song “Automotivo Da Turbulencia” was one of the year’s big funk hits and marked a turning point. Despite dark, melodic Automotivo continuing to be made (especially due to its success online, where it is sometimes wrongly perceived as a subgenre of other internet styles like drift phonk), many producers within the São Paulo scene have transitioned to the new percussive, lighter style in ZKW and co.’s wake. He has arrived in Europe with a set of songs engineered for maximum dancefloor impact. JIJEI is an event and online publication looking to deepen the connection between the electronic music cultures of Europe and Brazil. Funk’s growing presence on dancefloors of the non-Portuguese-speaking world must be met with sensitivity to the music’s context in order to be fully appreciated. A club night showcasing the most vital emerging Brazilian artists is paired with a blog in which Brazilian journalism and academic writing on funk are translated into English for the first time, alongside original writing. JIJEI allows listeners to be simultaneously shown and told funk’s origins, nuances and regional variations, with the goal of opening the door to a deeper connection to the music, and a collaborative and generative exchange.
