‘Botanical Correspondents’ finishes 19 April at Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery & Museum @ashburtonartgallery . Presented alongside the 7 prints by botanical artist Emily Harris (1837 -1925) the Alexander Turnbull Library chose to issue (from her vast output) in 1968 and 1980, my trio of installations respond to the spaces she worked in - Bush, Studio and Exhibitions.
Opening of “Botanical Correspondents: Crossing time with Julia Holderness and Emily Cumming Harris”, Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery. Exhibition runs until 19 April with an artist talk Sunday 29 March 11am.
“ZAWAA25 Premier Award winner Julia Holderness considers and responds to the work of Emily Harris, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first professional woman artists.
Emily Cumming Harris (1837-1925) is best-known for painting the indigenous flora of Aotearoa, producing hundreds of artworks in her studio in Whakatū Nelson. One hundred years after her death, her remarkable paintings continue to invite audiences to contemplate the beauty of the natural world. Holderness responds creatively to her life, work and artistic practices.
The central component of the exhibition – a trio of installations – traces Holderness’ working and the passage of time across the project – gathering, layering, and reconfiguring fragments of Emily’s imagery alongside her own. They act as both response and continuation, tracing a dialogue with Emily’s botanical world and the multiplicity she employed in depicting plants and nature.”

I’m working on a project about Emily Cumming Harris (1837-1925) a botanical artist and writer who lived in Nelson Whakatū. These prints of her exquisite paintings were produced by the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1979 - a large print run and very popular. I’m on the hunt for these prints to hang in an exhibition next year at Ashburton Art Gallery with stories of their ownership. Please share widely if you’re happy to, I would really appreciate it!
