The quiet legend that was Fred Wiseman died today at 96.
I knew him my entire life — he was my godfather. He taught me how to edit. Senior year of high school, I spent a month “assisting” him on his film Racetrack - which mostly meant wasting his time while he patiently taught me a skill I would use the rest of my life. I’ll never forget the terror of watching him mark up the work print on the six-plate Steenbeck, then walk away and leave me alone with the Guillotine splicer to execute the cuts. He was an inspiration in countless ways, but most of all in his absolute commitment to making films on his own terms — never doing anything he didn’t want to do, never compromising the philosophy behind his work. The films are of a singular and unmistakable voice. Many consider him the ultimate cinéma vérité director. He was also funny as hell. And quietly opinionated in a way that always made you want to agree with him. He was one of the few adults as kid who I just thought was cool. A life well lived.

Here are some photos from the Paris portion of the final 3 episodes of @thesummeriturnedpretty I took last fall. Thanks to the most photographable city and the collaboration with the amazing production designer #teresamastopierro and gorgeous lighting of cinematographer @sandravalde , and costume designer @jessflaherty_ , every day was such a joy to come to work. I adore this whole cast, the entire french crew was so insanely great (love watching grips great each other every morning with a double cheek kiss!!!) and I will be forever thankful to @jennyhan for taking me along on this journey!
