Tonight it’s the
@lctheater gala, celebrating 40 years since dad and Greg Mosher took over the theaters there.
Our family met André Bishop in 1989, on a trip to the (then) Soviet Union, we were on a group theater exhange. I was in college and André was by far the coolest person on the trip so I always tried to sit next to him on the bus. He had taste and style and a wicked sense of humor. I was instantly smitten.
When Gregory stepped down in the 90s, dad called André to ask his advice about who should take Gregory’s place. After discussing a series of potential candidates, dad said, “What do you think about André Bishop?” André proceeded to assess the pros and cons of that candidate in the third person. You know the rest.
André’s extraordinary leadership, the projects he has led, the grace, class and distinction that are some (but hardly all) of the hallmarks of his legacy at LCT are remarkable. The artists he championed, Bill Finn, Graciela Daniele, Susan Stroman, Nicky Martin, Chris Durang, Ahrens and Flaherty, Gerry Gutierrez, Jack O’Brien, of course Bart and so many others I can’t remember now inform our present. The work inspired so so much.
And tonight also marks the ending of a real era. Dad and André were WONDERFUL partners, and when Dad died, Adam Siegel filled the void brilliantly and led that place. As Lear takes her place at LCT, staff who have spent a lifetime there like
@karinschall ,
@evancabnet and Daniel Swee and so many other friends are saying a farewell to the place. I love André so much. I’m filled with emotion to be witness to this transition. It has been an honor to see LCT flourish these 40 years with all these fun, brave, wise souls. And I wish Lear, Nicole and everyone so much success in this new era of the building. Nostrovia.
