🎧🔬Listening Lab Experiment! Working with ambient and experimental soundscapes is one of the ways I practice attentional agency—consciously directing my attention toward where i personally choose, rather than passively being driven by external stimuli (like algorithms…) to where others might want my attention to land. Here’s a quick exercise. If you want to try more listening experiments in a community setting and explore how sound can help you reclaim your attention, join me and members of Innerspace Collective at @thewell.world on May 28th @ 7pm. FREE but seating is limited & tickets required (link in bio). Innerspace Listening Lab is in collaboration with @talklowfest in Cincinnati, OH and made possible, in part, by ArtsWave. #ListeningLab #AttentionalAgency #AttentionActivism #soundscapes #listen MindfulListening

05.28.26 - The Well (2454 Gilbert Ave) - 7:00 - 8:30pm *Free - RSVP Link in Bio Innerspace Listening Lab Interactive listening experiments in attentional agency using live improvised soundscapes Jenn Howd will be leading a group through a facilitated sound experience structured as a collective listening experiment. Participants will engage with a series of short, improvised live sound pieces performed by members of Innerspace Collective. Simple suggestions for engaging with the sounds will be offered before each piece, followed by facilitated reflection, inviting participants to notice how their attention and internal responses shift across varying sonic environments. In a media landscape deliberately designed to capture attention and anesthetize awareness, Innerspace Listening Lab offers counter-cultural practices that interrupt automatic consumption and support participants in reclaiming agency over their attention. Innerspace Listening Lab was designed and will be facilitated by j. howd (they/them), an avid meditator and multi-disciplinary artist whose work bridges contemplative practice and art to question dominant narratives and create space for deeper connection with self, community, and the greater web of life. Their work has been presented and published domestically and internationally on the radio, in books, art galleries, community organizations, sculpture parks, on stages, and in film theatres. IG: @jennHOWD . For more info about Innerspace Collective, visit IG: @innerspace.sound The Innerspace Listening Lab is in collaboration with the Talk Low Music Festival taking place September 24-27th in Cincinnati, OH and is made possible, in part, by ArtsWave. Please join us on 05.29 at the Woodward Theater to welcome the ambient music legend William Basinski to Cincinnati.

I had the honor of performing Live at Fuse Box in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 6, 2025. The piece I created for this show was inspired by my recognizing ways that I sometimes tend to ignore things or brush things aside. And how not confronting things head-on and examining situations with open eyes has kept me stuck in certain ways. I’m tired of doing that. Making this piece helped me process that I had been doing this for a while, and it helped me solidify my desire to do things differently moving forward. I offer it to those who might also find it helpful in some way. A few scenes and excerpts from July 12th’s magical show at The Carnegie Galleries with poet Elese Daniel and percussionist Allen Otte. Thank you to all who came out! Our collaboration was in response to the current exhibit “Notations on Ritual.” And my work, specifically, consisted of: Video sonification of select works from the exhibit; Evolving soundscapes incorporating field samples + musical elements; Storytelling via vintage cassette playback + silent meditation. Huge thanks to Briana Matzke, the International Foundation for Contemporary Music (IFCM), and Sso-Rha Kang for bringing us all together for such a beautiful experience. If you haven’t had a chance to check out “Notations on Ritual,” the exhibit is up at The Carnegie Galleries through August 16th.

Three weeks ago on a Saturday, if you had wandered into The Carnegie art galleries @thecarnegie you would have found something perhaps a little unexpected. Instead of the usual hush of a contemporary art exhibition, there were musical instruments being unpacked. Someone carefully arranging small objects on a table: tools? Relics? Both? You would have seen a musician walking in slow arcs across the floor, feeling out acoustics. A poet scribbling in a notebook, curled in a corner with a pillow and a jar of water. It was unclear where the exhibit ended and the rehearsal began. This was Part 1 of Practice as Ritual, a two-part collaboration between the International Foundation for Contemporary Music and gallery curator Sso-Rha Kang, shaped in response to the exhibition Notations on Ritual. The premise was simple: invite a group of artists into the gallery not to perform, but to work. Let their artistic practice (and the associated rituals that make up said practice) be visible. Let the public wander through it, to overhear it, misinterpret it, and respond to it themselves. For musicians and poets, practice is often private. It takes place far from the gaze of an audience. It is repetitive, uncertain, sometimes obsessive. It is not necessarily graceful. But it is also where the shape of a work begins to form, and where the artist begins to understand their own response to a place, a sound, a prompt, a set of ideas. On Saturday, July 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m., the same artists who put their practice on view will return to the gallery. This time, they will perform. Please note, this is not a traditional concert, and not a fully scripted sequence of poems or pieces, but a collaborative expression shaped by the public rehearsal that came before it. Their performance will not explain the exhibition, nor summarize it. But it may illuminate the strange, slow process of coming to terms with a ritual... someone else’s or your own. Performers: @_____trying @jennhowd and the legendary percussionist Allen Otte This event is free and open to the public.

Oh my goodness, my heart is so full of gratitude right now. “Resonant Matter” is officially up and running at @pyramidhillpark ! 💓☺️ I worked for 10 months on this project, together with such a kind and generous team providing guidance, instruction, and support along the way. Thank you @truestacysims and @thewell.world , Maria Jenkins, @kaydee8888 , @visualcodepoetry , @trayfordjames , John Hardig and @treasuretronics_ , and my beloved, @advokatemc . This installation would not have been possible without each of you! Resonant Matter explores the sonic life of sculpture, myth, and material decay and centers on three ancient sculpted figures from the park’s collection—Persephone, Athena, and an unidentified Muse. Using my iPhone’s Lidar scanner, I captured the surface data of each figure, mapping their contours and spatial dimensions. This data was then processed through sonification tools to create ambient textures interwoven with field recordings, processed vocals, and instrumental elements inspired by the figures’ material, geographic, and symbolic histories. My creative process led me into a deeply spiritual dive, during which I opened to the energies of each Goddess and did my best to humbly channel them into immersive soundscapes that reflect their symbolism and mythic resonance. The resulting soundscapes play on continuous loops through analog tape players placed beside each piece. As the tapes and players gradually lose fidelity over time, they introduce distortions—added noise, reduced clarity, and altered tones—all of which mirror the slow erosion of the artifacts themselves. The physical analog installations will be at the park through November 21st, after which the digital versions of the tracks will remain available via QR codes through 2027. If you’re outside the Cincinnati area and would like to listen to the tracks, feel free to DM me, and I’ll be happy to send them to you. 🙏🏻💓🎧

I’ve started painting - something I’ve never spent any time doing up until this moment. Was just never pulled toward it. Was always drawing, instead… But a spirituality class I’m taking on emotions facilitated an exercise where we painted our anger a couple weeks back. I had little anger to express at the time - sadness is what arose for me. This painting emerged from that. Sharing it here, as it seems fitting on some level for the collective moment many of us are feeling. 💗 #watercolors #watercolorflowers #watercolorflorals #emoart

When the weight of seeing (and feeling) our world cracking and crumbling, the chasms of our deep divides plummeting deeper with each passing moment - and the fear of what I perceive to be the inevitable collapses becomes too much for me. After letting myself have a good long sob - I inevitably find myself seeking solace in Mother Nature’s wild and wonderful embrace. These are trying times. It’s undeniable. AND, there is such beauty to behold.… This is a photo of roughly 450 MILLION YEAR OLD marine fossils I found a few days ago on a walk along a stream bed in French Park, a mere 6 min drive from my house. Look closely, and you will see a Brachiopod, a seashell-like creature, as well as many Bryozoans - ancient corals. (Cincinnati is known around the world for our abundant and well-preserved Ordovician-age fossils. The rocks beneath the city and its surrounding area preserve an ancient marine ecosystem that once inhabited this region roughly 450 million years ago.) 🦋🌸🌱🐰💗
