I chose “Concerning Hobbits” from Fellowship of the Ring for this post, because yesterday’s experience at the first ever Moose Jaw Film Festival was heartwarming as shit and I’m feeling sentimental. It was a big ol’ friend fest and a real celebration of the collaborative spirit of the Saskatchewan film community. And by George, if there weren’t some damn good films and commercials and music videos and web series episodes, too. The quality of work being done here is really impressive. Also, I MUST SAY, despite this festival being put together so quickly, it was easily one of the best I’ve ever been to. The trio of @timothylenko , @jeremyratzlaff , and @nicklamb_realestate thought of everything, and were incredible hosts. Super professional, welcoming, and inclusive. If you missed it this year, you won’t wanna next year. Here’s one of the only photos I have from yesterday, of me, @styledayne , and @dylanhryciuk after the awards gala, and Our Last Day As Kids taking home four awards, including Best Director, Short Film, Performance, and Best of Festival. Feeling very proud of everyone on the OLDAK team. Ghosts of Yesterday went live on YouTube last month, and I’m so happy it’s out there in the world now. This was one of the most rewarding creative experiences I’ve ever had, and it was my first real foray into the local Saskatchewan film industry. The filmmakers in this province are amazing, as people and as creators (as are the few imports we brought in from AB and BC!). Everyone brought it, and also brought a lot of care to this sensitive project. Couldn’t be more grateful. Anyway, here’s some BTS of this thing! About a month ago, I went down to Moose Jaw and got to act in @timothylenko ’s directorial debut, A Priest Walks Into a Bar, through his production company, @heartswornfilms . It was such a satisfying experience, doing my first work in Saskatchewan as an actor since my high school play days, with a bunch of people who I just loved creating with; some whom I’ve had the great privilege of working with before, and some new collaborators who all showed up and blew me away. So much fun sharing the screen with @thomasmichaelperras and @bethanykknapp , and it was a real treat to get to watch @jessthecreativemess shine, too! Stoked for y’all to see what we did! Ghosts of Yesterday is finally out in the world. What a long road it’s been. But I still remember the experience on set like it was just the other day. I was so nervous, because this production suddenly became much bigger, with many more resources thrown at it than my last film, Forever Friend. That, and it was sensitive subject matter, so I wanted to make sure I was being as authentic and considerate as I could be. But then we started rolling. Sure there were challenges, but I’ll never forget how incredible it felt to see all of these gifted artists pouring their energy and focus into bringing the story to life. I couldn’t stop tearing up. What a powerful experience. I felt very welcomed by the Saskatchewan film community, and very inspired by their passion. I am so proud to now be a part of that community myself, and of this first project we created together. Ghosts of Yesterday was born of a dark time in my life, when I was asking a lot of really difficult questions, and I hope it helps start/furthers the mental health conversation for whoever ends up watching it.
