SALUTE TO THE ORIGINATORS | DJ BIG WHUP
house music from the beginning | only on
@mixcloud
Like many of you, I love house music. At some point, I decided that I wanted to really learn about the who what when where of house music. It’s so embedded in our day to day lives now, I think it’s easy to forget that it really did begin in a real place, The Warehouse… (some record stores in Chicago would have a crate titled ‘music heard at the warehouse’ or just ‘house music’ for short… yes, the entire genre originally refers to one specific venue which was notorious for playing an incredible variety of genres curated and combined by the one and only, Frankie Knuckles. House music is not only the logical successor to disco, it also represents a generational shift in technology-assisted creativity that adapted musical influences through sequencers and samplers into a hypnotic fusion which eventually became the entire universe we now know and love.) and I know that I didn’t know that until I learned it on purpose.
Through this exploration, I have greatly deepened my appreciation for the entire genre past and present, thanks to these Black musicians in Chicago and beyond, like Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Jesse Saunders, Steve ’Silk’ Hurley, Larry “Mr. Fingers” Heard, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Marshall Jefferson, Kym Mazelle, and many many more. I know in my heart that I owe these tremendous souls a lifetime of gratitude, and it is my hope that DJs and listeners old and new know and respect the genuine origin and culture of house music (believe it or not, most house music is even more enjoyable when you consider the genre’s original context, try it). I don’t know where I would be without them, it’s even harder to imagine our world today without the impact house music has had on our lives. And so, I salute. -jcmb ♥️♥️ #linkinbio
