“Nothing stopped me. I was like a bull in a china shop. Get out of my way!”
On the cover of our April / May issue, Amy Hill looks back on a multifaceted career on stage and screen. From 50 First Dates to American Dad!, Hill’s talent is turning supporting roles — think the sassy neighbor or the no-nonsense shopkeeper — into unforgettable characters.
The Deadwood-born actor opens up about navigating Hollywood as a hapa performer (“They said I didn’t look Japanese”) and seeking out roles that go beyond stereotype. “If they were giving me a character that was one-dimensional, I’d pass on it. If I was just a joke, I’d pass. But if the role had a personality … I could create a character.”
More than 200 roles later, Hill is still busier than ever. She currently stars on Amazon Prime’s Ballard, a spinoff of Bosch, where she dispenses wisdom as Maggie Q’s grandmother.
“I do this for fun. That’s pretty good.”
